"I thought you would want out of the room, not another reason to stay in it." She teased, turning to kiss him softly. The tattoo was concerning, but not something she was willing to linger on too much. "Maybe it was just another Vegas thing, you know? I'm sure there's some wild story behind it and we'll both laugh when things start making sense again." There was no telling how long she would be able to reason things away like this. The more they tried, the more feeble it sounded.

He turned his wrist from side to side when she continued to speak about the tattoo. Yeah I'm sure. Maybe I'm secretly a really deep person and it has some profound meaning.. He joked. But lets be honest. I was probably drunk. Don't worry about it right now, okay? He kissed her again trying to forget the stupid ink decision on his wrist he'd try to figure that out later. Sometimes he really wished Becca wasn't such an 'innocent girl next door' type. He immediately felt guilty after the thought passed through his head. He should love his girlfriend the way she was, and he did, right?

The nagging feeling at the back of he mind intensified as the call disconnected and displayed her main screen. Ten missed calls from Liam. Five missed calls from Danielle. More missed messages than her phone was willing to display. And one tale-tell picture that could change everything if she had looked at it long enough. Gem had handed her the phone and cocked an eyebrow at her. She looked like she'd seen a ghost What's wrong? He couldn't concentrated as the the obnoxious sound of his phone going off with some hip hop song he hadn't ever remember hearing distracted him. Squinting through the shattered pieces of the screen he could see that Dani was calling, who knew how many times she had tried to call at this point. He was surprised he even had cell service out here. Somehow he managed to unlock the screen without slicing his finger open. You've reached Gem Loser. What's up He asked though he didn't expect her to take his casual greeting lightly especially if she had been trying to get a hold of him.

And there it was Becca's boyfriend. He wasn't Becca's boyfriend I-I well I don't know who the hell Liam is and for the record even if I did I wouldn't care if he wanted to kick my ass anyway. Becca's twin? Becca has a twin?! He suddenly remembered the picture of Vegas with what he thought was Becca and Him but it was apparently Becca's twin. He felt like he was going to be sick and the room started to spin just a bit. He dropped down into a chair rubbing his forehead, phone still pressed against his ear. Yes Becca is with me. no we didn't go to the hospital. No I will not over my dead body leave my car. if Gem had his way he'd go crawl up inside his car and die right about now. At least it would be something familiar.

I don't know. It was cold I just wanted to get Becca somewhere warm and then the whole pregnancy thing. The pregnancy test.. Gem was grateful he had only eaten a couple pieces of bacon and left the rest of his breakfast untouched or it might have been all over the hotel floor. He wasn't sure what was more nauseating having a baby or Becca having a baby with someone else. He thought back to the picture of him and 'Rae' in Vegas trying to concentrate on anything to connect the girl as being Rae and not Becca but he was coming up short. that's because I don't Dani. I don't remember those people. I don't remember Vegas. Apparently I have a tattoo... he stared down at the letters on his wrist. He knew she was right if the school alerted his parents that he was missing his dad might come to town just to physically smack him upside the head, but Gemini was stubborn and that stupid car was the last bit of consistency he had as his reality was crumbling down around him. He dropped into the chair all of sudden feeling every from the last few days. Small pieces were starting to connect though the picture was still fuzzy. He remembered the club with Dani and how she had tricked him. Now he remembered the tattoos, wasn't there someone else there? Ralph that's right. Ralph, Lassie, The scooby to his shaggy. His head still hurt and his chest ached. He rested his head in his hands not bothering to look up. how much of that did you hear?

Becca spent most of the short conversation staring at her phone and willing that all to familiar picture to come back up. She knew it was important, something that she needed to remember, but she just couldn't quite get there. It was like something was holding her back, a final piece in the puzzle that she needed. Gem's words shook her out of it and she stood to walk over to him. "None of it, I spaced out. What's wrong babe?" She asked, wrapping her arms around his shoulders to hug him tightly. Whatever Dani had said to him, it looked like Gem wasn't happy with it. "Is someone hurt? Did we miss something important? I mean, we can call a taxi and I can head back if there's something you need me to go take care of. Whatever you need." Leaning down, she kissed the top of his head softly before resting her cheek there. Hopefully the contact would give him a little bit of the comfort it had over the past couple days. |

Unbeknownst to Becca her attempts to comfort him were more like rubbing salt in a wound. He could lie, she hadn't been paying attention he could make up something about Dani having a problem that pissed him off. He wouldn't though even if a part of him really wanted to. The worst thing about the whole situation was the feeling of having everything you thought you knew ripped out from under you. It was like being stuck in that moment when you know you're about to fall and you gasp, reaching out to try and cling to anything to keep it from happening because you know it's going to hurt. That moment of pure lack of control.
He couldn't decide if he was heartbroken or angry. Part of him felt like he was being torn apart Becca was his person, she had always been and between What Dani had said on the phone and the pregnancy test in her purse things seemed pretty serious with what's his face but if he wasn't her boyfriend why were they in a hotel together? Where was her boyfriend? Shouldn't he be the one here with her with the bruises on his face? Shouldn't he be the one with the smashed up car? He remembered the paperwork Becca had found in her purse before they had gotten to town. it must have had to do with those. Had she asked him to drive her? Either way it was such a Becca thing to do. She knew no matter what she could always call him and he'd come running always wanting to be her hero. He couldn't ignore the anger that was starting to build though he wasn't sure if it was at Becca or himself. She had called him and he had pathetically came running like her little puppy dog as usual.
Gem slipped out of her arms. And there it went his warm little center of the universe was now cold and lonely, but that was the big kicker right? All those phone numbers, the girls, the friends he surrounded himself with but the truth was was his inability to relate emotionally had left him isolated. That might be a good idea Rebecca I wouldn't want your boyfriend to show up and "kill me" There was a very unlike Gemini coldness to his voice as he stood staring at her with arms crossed over his chest.

Becca was hurt and confused when Gem pulled away, but it was nothing compared to what he was saying. "I don't know what you're talking about. Gem, why wouldn't we be together. Look at your phone, we were just in Vegas together. We were out on a road trip. Babe, you're scaring me." She wanted to run over to him, make all of this disappear. Whatever Dani had said must have been horrible to make him act like this.
Before she could open her mouth to plead with him more, to tell him she loved him and that this was ridiculous, her screen lit up again from the same person as before. That Liam guy. It didn't take her even picking up the phone to know that he was her boyfriend, not Gem.
That was when the dam broke.
The nagging feeling went away almost instantly as the memory of a hole in the wall restaurant and a shattered cup came to mind, followed closely by the most amazing sight of her life. Purple flowers cascading down lower falls, kissing Liam for the first time outside her dorm...the first time she heard his name.
"Oh my god." She whispered, falling in to the chair and willing that picture to stay. The strange dreams, the nagging feelings, they all made sense now. She hadn't gone to Vegas with Gem, that had been.."Oh my god. Raelynn. My sister. What's she going to think...aren't you two? You aren't with me...you're with my sister. Gem. Oh my god." Did this count as cheating? This totally shouldn't count. They had no idea, if anything they had proof. Besides, it was just once, right?
That didn't mean she hadn't been prepared to do it again or that the fuzzy pieces that were begging for a better answer weren't hoping that Gem would just be joking. She could tell him for the hundredth time since the accident that she loved him and then everything would be okay. But she couldn't, because there on her screen was the image of Liam, the man that she loved, truly and endlessly. She needed to be back with him, not with Gem. This was all just a huge misunderstanding, and she had the nagging feeling that Gem was never going to forgive her for it. He might never speak to her again. "I'll stay tonight, unless the car is already fixed. I know you won't leave it and I don't want to leave you here alone. You're still my person, right?" She answered, finally looking Gem in the eye as she spoke. They had to at least still be friends on some level. They had to have that.
The picture on her phone faded as the call went unanswered, even as she wracked her brain for Liam's number. Things were still too fuzzy for a detail like that. She could remember their first date, their first everything...but she couldn't remember the seven simple numbers that would bring her his voice, let him know she was okay. |
