 hands of time DAY AFTER DAY, LIKE A LIFETIME AWAY, I KEEP HOLDIN' ON It had just reached noon. Al had just spent most of his morning in the library picking between two books. Herodotus's Histories or Niccolò Machiavelli The Prince. Although both books had been read by him before this time would be different. He had finally gotten the chance to reserve a copy of both in Latin. He had just recently finished learning the language by staying up for the past four days teaching it to himself. It was a difficult task for anyone but with his iq somewhere in the range of 180 -200 it was an obtainable goal. Choosing which one would be read was the hard part. The text of Herodotus was great but it had only made the final two because the Latin version of Thucydides History of the Peloponnesian War had yet to reach the library. A shame really. He enjoyed the Histories but it wasn't factual enough for Alton. While the Prince wasn't historical text in a sense he couldn't forget how the world saw the book. It was recommended that anyone who wanted to be in any forms of politics should read it. Today that was more than good enough for Alton. Once he got the book and left the library he would find himself a cozy little spot at the end of the lawn. He would place his blanket on the grass while he scanned the area making sure no one would be able to disrupt his reading with footballs or Frisbee over thrown. Last time he forgot to check and was tripped over by some kid with Superhuman speed. It didn't matter if you were fast as Flash if you weren't watching where you going. Alton remembered that day specifically because he tried to read the mind of the kid who tripped over him after it happened. His thoughts were going just as fast as his legs making it nothing but rambling to Alton's ears. It was enough to cause a migraine. He would be sure to try again though if the opportunity ever presented itself he didn't want there to be a mind in the world he could not understand. The chances of the kid being here again were highly unlikely. Alton knew that but he had been wrong before. You couldn't calculate the likelihood of a kid appearing on a campus at the same place as you because how often teenagers change how they wanted to do. As a whole they were a fickle group whose decision making was affected by a multitude of things including weather, what their friends wanted to do, and what the majority found interesting. He on the other hand could care less. It could be pouring rain outside right now instead of the nice cool breeze going on right now and he'd still come out here to read the book. Although he may have brought an umbrella with him as to not allow the rain to destroy such a classic of modern philosophy. He had spent enough time policing Carlisle hall that he felt he deserved a brake. Most kids would be heading to class now. Being introduced to new students and teachers. Alton always skipped the first day. There was never any work to hand in and he usually got bored reading minds of people examining which boys and girls were cute while calling him a weirdo for entering in long dialogues with the teacher that extended the class time for all in attendance. Now wasn't the time to reflect though. His put his bag down and opened up the notebook he had brought with him to take notes. Like most things he did Alton would be multitasking. Due to the fact that he could read 15,000 word per second while extremely focused it would be pointless to read the book alone he would be done in minutes. Which is why he would be listening to the thoughts of people walking the lawn from time to time and take notes. Maybe something interesting would be heard.  The day had trudged on fairly slow for one that had went well. All of her classes were easy enough that she wouldn't have to put forth even the usual minimal effort that she normally gave. It wasn't that she was stupid, she just didn't see why a formal education was so important when they were never going to be able to leave this stupid town. What was she going to do, get a degree so that she could teach the next generation? They had to run out of teaching positions some time.
Her brooding continued all the way over to the shaded area where she liked to spend some of her free time. Dani loved her friends, she really did, but it annoyed the hell out of her to never be alone. That's why she came all the way out to Zellner Lawn, to relax and be on her own for a little while.
The only problem was that some guy seemed to be sitting in her spot reading a book. Great, just great. Dani wasn't one to be deterred though, slamming her bag down at the base of the tree a few feet away from the intruder and slinking down on to the ground. It was a big park after all, so it shouldn't bother whoever this was to share some space. And besides in the mean, mean time

hands of time DAY AFTER DAY, LIKE A LIFETIME AWAY, I KEEP HOLDIN' ON Fifteen minutes of mind reading all he was hearing were people think about things that were of no interest of him. He didn't care who would be trying to talk to who or what new social media was the big crave. To be fair he wasn't a fan of the whole social networking idea. People who used social networking frequently had less interpersonal skills and due to this their relationships in the real world were known to suffer. It was a double edged sword though because people used social networking to get support. People felt like the people they talked to whether they were strangers or not really cared for them and people with more social relationships on average lived longer than those with fewer relationships. Quite an irony it was. Children constantly reminded by an older generation about how it felt to frolic outside and how they always stayed inside on computers and video game consoles when those things were actually factoring into health in an astounding amount of ways. It would make an interesting paper for his science class actually. The effects technological advancements in communication have effected the society we live in. In the middle of reading the minds in the area Alton finally caught one that grabbed his interest. It seemed the mind he had entered was thinking about him in a negative light and for once he wasn't being referred to as crazy Al. He instead was just the boy in the way. It was funny really. The spot in the lawn was so out of the way that a girl had claimed it for herself. He looked up to see her sitting at the tree only a few feet away from him. She was pretty. He hadn't seen her before but to be fair his first semester was spent mostly in the library trying to read every book within the walls. A process which would almost be done. Alton soon realized he was staring at the girl. Her frustration interesting to him. He looked back down into the Prince. Although he had read most of it in the little bit of time he had spent here his mind was now completely focused on hers. If she wanted the spot he would kindly offer it to her. Although his method would probably freak her out more than anything. His voice would project in her mind with no one else able to hear him. "I didn't know this was your spot. I am however already situated here. If you would like to sit with me though I would not mind. There is more than enough blanket for both of us. If you rather sit alone I could leave too."
Alton knew he shouldn't have taken the liberty of letting the girl know he was in her mind but it was a force of habit. He never truly did learn his lesson from the abundance of people he had made uncomfortable before this. Hopefully her reaction would be a little more accepting of his skills. Someone knowing what you were thinking made it easier for them to not frustrate you at least. |

A male voice wafted through her mind, startling the young telumkinetic for a few minutes while she tried to process what was happening. How was that even possible? Then the realization hit her. A telepath. The boy sitting in her spot was a telepath. Great.
She wasn't annoyed with him, but more with herself for being selfish. It wasn't like she owned the spot on Zellner lawn, but then again she wasn't used to people actually being able to hear her internal monologue either. That was going to take some getting used to for sure. Sorry...I didn't...Talking in her head just wasn't going to work for her right now, but maybe she'd try it again later some time.
The next best thing she could do to make up for being an ass was to get up and walk over there like the guy had suggested. Settling down on the blanket, she looked at him for a moment. He was hot, she'd give him that...but she couldn't go there right now. Even if it was irrational and rushed, she was still in a kinda-sorta relationship and even she had standards...unfortunately. "Hey...sorry about that. I'm Dani by the way." If he had already invaded her mind once, she might as well offer it to him freely. It would just make things easier.

He was surprised she was reacting so well to him invading her mind. Last girl he had communicated telepathically had smacked him so hard he had considered not using his powers again for a whole week. Fortunately enough the usage of his skills had resulted in him getting some attractive company. He would have to see how long this opportunity to hear her thoughts and hold a interesting conversation would last. He would say his last sentence out loud since that was how she decided to speak. "Danielle the French variant of the Hebrew name Daniel meaning God is my judge. Were your parents religious? Mine most certainly were not. In fact they were probably embodying the seven deadly sins on a daily basis. Well most of them at least. It is human tendency to sin . Although the sins most people commit daily are venial meaning they aren't guaranteed eternal damnation if they right the path. Assuming you believe in that type of thing."Alton put The Prince down on the blanket. He had a few more pages left and although he could finish it right now he didn't want Danielle to think that she didn't currently have his attention. Reading a new mind always peaked his interest especially when the person knew he was doing it. He no longer had to be worried about the response he would get. Asking questions was just a strategy he used to make the mind read easier. If he didn't ask questions to make the thoughts pop up in their mind instead of having to dig into the crevices of her mind were people stored all their information. He left the book with all the thoughts he had written down today open. He had turned the page backwards once so she wouldn't see her own thoughts if she looked down into it. In all his rambling he realized he had forgot to introduce himself. "My name is Alton by the way. It's roots come from Old English with it literally meaning old town. Not as common a name as yours. I was named after my grandfather though and the name was much more common during his birth year then it is now. Most people just call me Al though. Sometimes crazy gets added as a prefix. Most people are kind enough to just think it." A sarcastic remark considering he would still know they meant to put the crazy in front of his name. |

Dani listened in confused awe as Alton explained her name and then his in great detail. It was definitely the most interesting introduction she had ever heard, but it didn't bother her. If anything, it made her think about her parents and siblings. Had her mom been religious? Is that why her dad left and mom took his rights away? It would kinda explain why the state hadn't even attempted to contact him after Jessia died. Maybe he was a sinner and a bad one at that. "Ive never been big on religion and I don't know if my mom was or not. A few of my foster parents were though." she observed absentmindedly as she thought about his other comments.
Why would people call him weird Al, unless it was a reference to the Weird Al Yankovich guy...or whoever his name was. "Do people call you that because of your power or because your a walking encyclopedia? Either way, that's just asinine." if he could ask questions so could she. It was no fun to have two people reading the same open book.

He couldn't just writing her thoughts as they entered her mind it would of been breaking away from the norm for him. He realized now that maybe he shouldn't have brought up the whole parents thing some people didn't have great relationships with their folks for all types of reason. Normally he would have asked maybe one more question but it was she who struck back with a question of her own. Why had he been called crazy? The real question was why he wasn't called crazy more often. "Walking encyclopedia is one I haven't heard before though. I would assume I am a little bit better than a encyclopedia just because I gain more information daily while most encyclopedias are updated quarterly. Well most people aren't exactly very comfortable with the whole voice that doesn't belong to them talking in their mind. Gets even worse when they realize that I am hearing all their thoughts as well. You're probably the first person who actually didn't flip out when they realized I was in their head. Add in the intelligence and I am not exactly the guy people invite to parties."He paused for a second before he responded to the asinine comment. He was probably making himself out to be a loser which wasn't his intention at all ironically enough. At one point he agreed it was foolish to consider him crazy because of his intelligence but the truth was he was a little crazy. "You know it isn't really asinine for them to call me crazy. Throughout history creativity and intelligence have been shown to share a very close relationship with insanity. I mean people who are considered geniuses are more likely to suffer from Schizophrenia and Bipolar disorder. In the science world they refer to it as the tortured genius. In fact Aristotle once said "no great mind has ever existed without a touch of madness."He smiled after the last sentence. Maybe he would just shut up after this. If he didn't make himself look like a loser before at least he solidified himself as a psychopath. There was some truth to the statement though he did suffer from bipolar disorder. His intelligence could be to blame but it coudl of been in his genes due to mental illness more often than not being a hereditary thing. |

No, that still wasn't right. Maybe it was her secretly protective nature flaring up or the fact that he just seemed like a misunderstood guy, but for some reason the crazy comment was something that Dani wasn't ready to just let slide. "No, in general that just means people are assholes. You'd think in a school of freaks we'd be beyond name calling by now. Unfortunately, with great power comes great stupidity." It was like having an awesome ability made you the equivalent to a jock from a normal high school. No brains, all brawn. At least Dani was decently smart enough to handle her self like a decent human being when she wanted to.
"Alright, I asked you a question, fairness states that you can ask me another if you want." A small grin spread across her lips, though she wasn't sure why. Normally she didn't talk to complete strangers like this, especially ones who could invade her privacy at will. Maybe it was just because she tried so hard to keep from judging people based on their powers and the side effects that come with them.

Not only had she been okay with the fact that he initiated contact by entering her thoughts. Now she was making it seem as crazy should not be a word used to describe him. Alton had been convincing himself of his own insanity for such a long amount of time he never truly considered how other people calling him that all the time might have influenced his own idea. Instead of defending himself he was essentially looking for reasons to agree with them. Separating himself even further from the people he was supposed to be able to relate to in other gifted people. He laughed a little about him being permitted to ask another question. "How do you know I haven't already searched your mind for everything I need to know about you?"Of course he hadn't done it yet. There was no reason for him to go below the surface. Her conversation at this very moment was enough to keep him interested. Being able to hear her current thoughts while she communicated with him was really just icing on the cake. Going into her mind for extra information would of just been rude at this point. Besides he would promised he would work on using his powers responsible. Reading minds wasn't frowned upon but sometimes finding more personal intimate thoughts was frowned upon. "I guess since I revealed my telepathic abilities to you I should ask you what skill got you sent to Ashford? Also why weren't you bothered with hearing my voice in your head? Like I previously stated most people aren't fans of me hearing all their thoughts. You were irritated earlier and still seemed to be calm at the idea of me hearing your thoughts. That is pretty strange to me to say the least."Alton may have been a telepathic genius but understanding how people got to thinking the way they did was something he struggled with from time to time. Reactions were usually based on personality and development. The girl seemed pretty strong minded and that made it hard for him to imagine Danielle being a fan of really sharing her thoughts like this even with it happening right now. He finally closed the book. There was no reason to write down anything anymore. He would remember the conversation anyway. If he wanted to write about it later he would. For now he just wanted to hear her answer and if it was matching what she was really thinking. |

Even if he had asked two questions instead of one, Dani didn't really mind. They were easy and two of the ones she was pretty open about anyways. "I'm a telumkinetic with the ability to summon weapons. I can't create them yet, but the trainers are hoping it'll come with time. Until then I've got a pretty awesome quirk whenever you discount the fact that someone has to have the intent to harm me for it to stick." As an example, she held her hand out towards the backpack she had left over by the tree and summoned one of the books inside to her. It knocked over the rest of the bag as it left the open top, but it still flew in a straight line until it rested in the palm of her hand. "Its all about intent, mine or someone else's. But once I have control over it, it stays."
The other question was slightly more personal, but still practical at the same time. Dani had her flaws as a human and as an SPB, but this didn't tend to be one of them. "I don't mind your power because we don't get to choose them, but we shouldn't have to be wary of them either. Some of us have lost everything because of them. Family, friends, homes, we shouldn't have to lose them too just because they make other people uncomfortable. The belt she normally wore was in her backpack as well and she focused on it until it sat on her lap, lacing it through her fingers as she spoke. It was the one thing she never went without even if she wasn't wearing it. "Your power is mental so it bothers people more. Mine scares people because the only thing it can be is destructive. There's no effective way for me to use it without someone getting hurt in the process. They don't like things they can't control, but that doesn't mean I have to hate them, or you, or anyone else who has a power that messes with mine unintentionally."

This school really did bring all the most uniquely powered people together. The amount of people's powers he had yet to seen was amazing to think of. He had yet to even speak to another person with the psychic abilities he possessed. It had become something he had longed for. Someone who could understand what it was like to always hear people's thoughts. No what everyone around you was thinking but being unsure of what exactly you should do with all that information. He listened to her talk about people accepting other's abilities because they didn't choose this. He couldn't exactly relate to the whole losing everything without his powers. In honest without his powers he would probably lose everything. This was his sanity to feel like everyone was speaking directly to him when they weren't. All those times he could hear his parent's voices without them ever saying an actual word to him. In reality these powers might of given him a chance at pretending they were a real family. "I could understand viewing me as a threat. People like to hide emotions, ideas, fears and all things that they aren't quite ready to share with the world. The mind is supposed to be that very last sanctuary where everything is protected. I'm like the raider searching for anything of value. Even now as we speak your mind has told me more than you could tell me in a lifetime. Yet you can't even tell what information has been acquired by me. In a sense that makes me the perfect thief as well."He laid down looking into the sky after saying the last piece. Thinking about how his powers made others feel sometimes frustrated him. He never invaded a strangers mind for too long unless they were doing something suspicious and if someone close to him truly asked that he didn't enter their mind without permission he would consider it. Sometimes he would venture back in when he felt he was being lied to or couldn't quite understand what the person was saying. However he believed anyone with the skill would use it as such if the opportunity presented itself. |

It was an intriguing notion that he could already know so much about her, but what she was worried about was what he thought of it. Her mind and heart had been so many different kinds of messed up lately that whatever he saw couldn't be good. Most of the time she didn't care what strangers thought, or pretended like she didn't, and it kept her sane. But if she was being completely honest, she could be one of the most insecure people in the world. Years of being told no one loved you enough to keep you did that to a kid.
No, she didn't want to think about that now in front of a telepath, even if he might have already seen it. Well, he definitely had for sure now. For the first time in her life, her internal monologue was really starting to annoy Dani more than it calmed her down. Stupid thought process.
"Oh really, and what interesting things have you learned about me so far? It can't be that entertaining, I'm sure." Or it could be terrifying, depending on how you looked at it. How many people could say they were wrongfully accused of something like assault with a deadly weapon? Dani was a bucket of fun to the right people.

He didn't mind sharing the book. It was her own thoughts after all. It was like giving someone a refresher course on a book they wrote themselves. "I know I said I don't talk about the thoughts that people have when I am listening to their mind but I must ask one more question. Did you really assault someone? It's probably inappropriate of me to ask. If it makes you uncomfortable you don't have to respond."Danielle didn't seem like the type of person to commit such a crime. Her powers did make it likely that she could of called upon a weapon to appear in a fight. Maybe it was how her powers revealed themselves to her. Protecting her from being assaulted and in the end she was the one that got the weapon to protect herself. Situations like this had called for a little bit of rule breaking. There was no reason for him to wonder what truly happened when he could just search her mind for the answer or simply have her tell him herself. Besides she wanted to know what he was learning about her. If you thought about it Alton was doing exactly what she asked of him. He had avoided talking about her parents not being together anymore if anything he felt like he was bringing up the less touchy subject of the two. |

The ability to summon weapons allows Danielle to take any weapon within her line of sight, barring complications such as super strength or another more powerful telumkinetic. She is limited to only two weapons at a time, though she only usually takes one unless she's going for a bow and arrows. They always land safely in her palm with no chances of impalement, even if she turns around or moves her hand. The only way for this to injure another person is if they step in to the path of an incoming weapon before it switches directions. Her definition of the word weapon can be pretty broad, as she can summon anything that she has the intent to use as a weapon or that she has seen used as a weapon before, such as a belt.

Be careful making wishes in the dark, dark
Can't be sure when they've hit their mark
Well, at least now she knew he was paying attention. Part of her wanted to ask out loud if he was talking about the one that had landed her here or if it was just assault in general. Chances were, it was probably both, so she might as well get it out of the way. To date, Gemini was probably the only one who didn't completely judge her based off of her past escapades.
"I lived in a rough neighborhood. Some of my foster parents tried to keep me out of trouble, some didn't. Things happened and I had a little brother to look after. I'm not ashamed of the things I did to help myself or finley." Beating up the school bully was nowhere near as bad as some of the other things people around here had done, but it wasn't something to be proud of either. Even she knew that much.
Then there was the big time, the one on her record. That one was what she had been thinking about and the one that was the hardest to explain. If it wasn't for Principal Ashford and his meddling, she'd still be home with her brother. "I was convicted once, but that one wasn't my fault. A kid pulled a knife on me so I used my power for the first time. When the principal showed up to smooth things over he had to make my foster parents and brother think that I had done something horrible for them to let me go. Unfortunately they are extremely good people so they turned me in for assaulting the kid the next day." And they never trusted her again. Not with Finley, not in their home. Ashford should have just left her there.

"People have to do whatever they can to survive. I could of used someone like you in middle school. You probably were a great older sister. Fortunately for my parents I was the only one they ever had to deal with." Alton smiled at his little joke. He was always the victim of bullies. No matter what he did to fit in the genius kid could almost never catch a break. Kids knew he was different long before any Telepathic powers appeared. It could of been worse though. If he agreed to skip other grades and join the high school sophomores when he was twelve would of been far worst for him. Making teenagers feel inadequate by having someone so young match wits with them in each classroom would of caused him to be the ultimate target of all the bullies. Luckily for him the right decision was made in him moving up in classes. Her assault with a weapon charge was a little more interesting to Alton. His entrance to the school didn't have an incredible backstory. He never had a violent crime attached to his skills or anything like that. In fact his story was probably boring compared to hers. There was one clear similarity between what had happened to the two of them though. "They must enjoy editing people's minds here. Although I guess it makes the whole leaving your kids to stay at the academy you never heard of sound more worthwhile. You know I don't think my parents even bothered to see if this place was legitimate before they allowed me to be sent away here. They probably wouldn't of even cared regardless."His parent's were made to believe that their son's sickness had gotten unmanageable in the outside world. The safest place for him to be for medical reasons was Ashford. Since he had been here Alton was taking care of himself better than ever before. His medicine was always with him. He had to make sure he didn't experience all the minds in his head again. Without them he would certainly have lost his mind by now. |
