"Im starting to think parents suck in general. No kid I've ever talked to her had a decent home life, and the few who had close to one either killed or nearly killed their parents when their powers manifested. " Coach Bash was a good dad, but he was an SPB himself. Regular parents, it had to be that. So narrow minded that they couldn't stand it. Times like these she was almost thankful that her dad hadn't showed back up to screw her over like the others had.
The mind editing was a necessary evil though as far as she was concerned. It kept some of the innocents safe. "my brother had his messed with too, but not as horribly. He has enough doubt that he could remember the truth if he wanted to. The stimulus to do so would have to be pretty big though, like seeing me use my powers or something. " That wouldn't happen though because she wouldn't let it. Fin deserved better than that, better than her.

In some cases they say parents think they are doing great jobs with their children when they are the reason most of the times that their kids turn into bad parents. Of course every case is different but most of the time you can't know without examining previous generations. Sometimes it may have nothing to do with that at all. " It was something Alton had researched personally with his own parents. It was how he found out he had a brother. His father didn't discuss the existence of an older brother with Alton or his mother. He believed that the lack of a relationship with his oldest son made him less likely to have a relationship with his younger son. He wasn't bothered by the idea though. No matter what his father's personal issue was he never bothered to bring it up. After all his grandfather was nothing more than a shrewd businessman just like his father. Seemed like being emotionless was a hereditary thing. Hearing her talk about her brother made him think about the man he never met. They were related but may never know each other due to the fact that his father rather hide his old relationship with his current wife instead of taking the responsibilities of bringing a life into the world. "Well maybe that opportunity would present itself. Even if you don't want it to. Not that you said that of course but I mean never mind" As quickly as the idea reached his mind it was already out in open. Alton almost cringed when he said it. He shouldn't of said that and he knew it. The conversation had become so personal he didn't even realize that he may have been passing a boundary before it was too late. |

Hearing Alton respond to her unspoken thoughts made Dani do a slight double take, more because of his response than because she was actually upset. What would happen if Fin just showed up or if she ever accidentally used her powers in front of him? He'd remember and then the school would step in again. Wash, rinse, and repeat every time she got close to a normal life with her twin.
Then again, their normal had been much worse off than she was now. Maybe what she should be wishing for was that Fin would some how manifest his powers later in life so that he could join her. The likeliness of that happening dwindled every day, but she still hoped. Maybe he was just like her friend Nix, the one who the school couldn't find because of a rare power that was harder to trace.
"Under the right circumstances I would love for Finley to find out, but the kid has hard enough of a life as it is without me showing up to complicate it more by being a freak. He isn't one of us and the professors say he likely won't be. He's too old for a power to manifest according to the general research." There was only like a one percent chance that Fin could still turn up with powers, but both Dani and Kaelyn had pretty run of the mill stuff, so why wouldn't he? It just didn't make much sense at all to his distraught older sister.

Creating friends wasn't an easy thing and this conversation had been pleasant for the most part. Alton had someone willing to listen to what he had to say and didn't mind him picking at their brain. Couldn't beat that type of friendship. He was however blown back by her comment on being a freak. She had seemed so accepting of powered beings and their abilities but including her brother in the formula made her a freak now. Alton scratched the back of his head. "You aren't a freak. None of us are freaks. We are gifted people with abilities most in the world dream of having. I remember growing up wanting to be a superhero of some kind. Maybe telepathy wasn't my power of choice but it happened. These things we see at Ashford are more amazing then things see in their whole lifetime. Maybe you having powers will make everything easier for him."He was rambling now. He hadn't ever been very good at making people feel better but every once in a while it was worth a shot. He didn't like the idea of people being unable to known about their abilities because they weren't super-powered as well. In fact Alton always thought about leaving the community around Ashford after graduation. He would assimilate into regular society but hiding his powers wasn't truly part of the plan. |

Dani contemplated his words for a moment, leaning down to play with a piece of grass as she did. Part of her was briefly worried about the silence being awkward if she was quiet for too long, but then she remembered that he could hear her thoughts better than she could articulate them anyways. That could be both a blessing and a curse, but right now it didn't really bother her.
Could Finley ever be able to understand? It was the general consensus of most of the people here that normal humans couldn't be trusted with the SPB secret, much less someone who had already been manipulated to forget the first and only time they had seen a power in action. It would likely frighten her brother to see it again, if it didn't hit up against that stupid mental block again. Ashford had crossed a line there, not doubt about it.
"I wish he could be here with us without a power. Maybe the administration should start taking things like that in to consideration when looking at admission. How many of the people here who are out of control would benefit from having a sibling or other relative around? There has to be another way besides memory manipulations and cover ups."
That was the thing though. Dani hated the fear they instilled in their students, making them feel like they needed to hide all the time. Hide who you are. Hide where you are. Hide what you are. All they did was run and hide, but for someone like her that felt like something worse than a death sentence. Prison would be better than this, much much better.

He expected himself to become a member of the police force. A detective that could read the minds of those who we was prosecuting. They wouldn't even know they were giving themselves up to him without ever even saying a word. It would be an unfair advantage but he probably wasn't the only super powered being who wouldn't to use their gifts in the outside world. "I assume there are a lot more super powered beings than this school or city could ever hold. Some of them had to assimilate into normal life with their powers being used. I can't imagine every single one of them hiding these skills for their whole life. I mean I plan on being able to one day leave this place. I have no qualms with being able to use my skills within the presence of those without them. I just don't want the people I telepathically communicate with to experience mind wipes every time we have a little conversation."Alton always imagined the ideas of the way people with powers would be treated in normal society. He knew the most common reaction they would get is fear and hatred. They were different after all. A genetic difference that allowed them to do something people only saw in tvs and movies. "Some powers are easier to conceal than others, but mine drives me nuts to not use it. It's a part of me, so why leave the one place I can use it without regrets? I mean, even in Calloway we can mess around within reason as long as some tourist who got lost on the highway doesn't catch us. I just wish they would modernize and expand a bit." There were more than enough students to make small city. Why not have things like a mall or even a decent shopping center? It wasn't like they were hurting for business or an active audience. If anything it would improve the local economy to have more open jobs for the students to take. Heck, they could easily support a theme park if someone had enough money to put one up.
Still, what would she do if she did leave? Her record made police work pretty hard to come by, but that didn't mean she couldn't do something along those lines. However, her record should be able to do something like the military as soon as she turned eighteen. That would be a decent possibility some day. It would give her a place where she could use her powers for good and hopefully not draw to much attention. |
