It all started out as a simple swim.
Dani had just finished up her workout for the day and was still a little keyed up, so she made her way down to Keystone lake to beat the heat and have some fun. Her last concern was the beating she had taken back at the training center during a "sparing match" with one of the school bullies. The dude had barely pulled off a win, but she had gotten in a few good hits too.
About ten minutes in the water later, and Dani knew she was in trouble.
She had swum too far out before her adrenaline crashed and it was too late in the evening for anyone else to be out here, especially in the relatively secluded spot she had chosen for the day. Luckily for her, there was a small outcropping of rocks nearby and she was able to make it there before he strength completely failed.
Now she was stranded, laying across the rocks with her legs still in the water and her arms dangling limply across the side. Dani's entire body ached and she was almost certain that a few of her ribs were broken. If nobody found her, this was going to be a long, long night. and we're starting at the end

It was a pleasant day, even if the temperature was bordering on too hot. Ralph liked it warm and dry because although he loved the rain he hated the puddles left behind by it. As he jogged along the lakeside the warmth of the sun on his back and the sound of the lake made him yawn. He could definitely go to sleep to those sounds. Ralph wasn't here to sleep though and soon his steady pace grew into a much faster one and he ran along a path nearby the edge of the lake. He could feel his heart rate increasing as his feet pounded down on the ground creating a upbeat rhythm. Despite this pace his sensitive nostrils still picked up every scent, the trees, the water, the grass, the smell of his trainers and Danielle. Ralph stopped dead in his tracks, sure it wasn't unusual for other people to be out and about near the lake but not like this. He knew it was Danielle's scent that he picked up, eager to see his friend he followed the scent to a spot that was pretty much out of sight. Then he saw her and he felt his gut twist and despite the close proximity to the water he practically ran down to her, she was hurt he could see that from where he was stood. He made his way down to the rocks, he could smell that she was alive which alleviated a lot of the initial concern. "Dani?" Ralph said her name gently as he shook her shoulder, so that she knew he was there. Normally the water would bother him but with Danielle looking in such a bad way he put it out of his mind.  every step you take

She didn't know how long it took for Ralph to show up, but it didn't matter to Dani. The cold water had numbed her some time ago and she couldn't feel the pain in her chest anymore, much less her aching arms and legs. It didn't even bother her that he touched her shoulder. He was here and she was safe. "Hey there big guy." She croaked out, her voice hoarse and quite. This was worse than she wanted to admit and would only get worse when she thawed out. and we're starting at the end

Ralph looked Dani over quickly and knew he had to get her out of the water and warmed up soon because hypothermia wasn't going to be fun. Her hoarse greeting still made him smile, "Hey small person." He replied his own voice quiet but caring. He knew Danielle had told him straight that she was a lone wolf but Ralph's need to protect his friends were far stronger than her words and of course she was in a bad way and he couldn't leave her. It was times like these that his human compassion and Wolfs protective instinct worked hand in hand. "Is anything broken? " he asked. He was going to move her but wanted to make sure he wasn't going to aggravate a back or neck injury. every step you take

Ealier she had decided that her ribs were probably pretty banged up, but she hadn't really inventoried anything else. Did her neck hurt? Was her back aching from the exertion or from an injury she hadn't noticed yet? The downside of an adrenaline rush was the crash and she was definitely struggling with that right now. " My ribs, I think. Everything else is just..." Her comments stopped abruptly as she tried to stand up. Even though she still couldn't feel it, she knew that her ribs were protesting from the way moved under her skin. There was no way she was getting out of this on her own and she hated it, but at least Ralph was there now. Her body slumped back against the rocks as she gave up, only having moved a few inches at most.

Ralph noticed that she tried to stand up but it seemed her ribs weren't having any of it. She'd barely moved inches in her attempts to get up. Ralph figured it would probably hurt her a little if he moved her but he had to get her out of the water. He slid his right arm behind her shoulders and his left arm went under her knees, "I'm going to lift you. I need to get you out of this water." Ralph said gently before he lifted her out of the water. It took barely any effort for him to lift the smaller girl. Once he had lifted her out of the water he moved his arms so she was closer to him hoping his body hit would aid in getting freezing girl warmed up. every step you take

Ralph had warned her that he was going to pick her up, but she wasn't expecting it so suddenly. Still, his body was warm and she found herself huddling against him the best that she could. Dani wrapped one arm around his neck to pull herself closer and stayed that way. "Thank you Ralph." She didn't even call him big guy this time. Maybe she was getting sick or something. and we're starting at the end

He knew how vulnerable she must've felt, needing him to help her, she clearly wasn't as good at being alone as she thought. Heading towards the Academy. Ralph knew that while she was cold she couldn't feel anything and the pain she would feel once she was warm would be intense but he had to get her warm so she didn't get sick. "Maybe. Pulling away from him enough to look up at his face, Dani considered letting the subject drop, but that really wasn't her style. She wanted to be his equal and had done her research on the pack mentality. There was one aspect he was either forgetting or ignoring and she intended to let it be out in the open right now, even if she was out of it. "Every pack has two alphas, not one. We don't have to be one over the other if we're truly equal." There, she had said it. What was the worst thing that could happen now? At least she was out of the water.

Ralph looked down at her again as they continued walking, "It's not stupid, having a pack is like having a family. ". He couldn't help the grin that spread across his face when she mentioned him being the voice of reasoning. She did have a point and Ralph knew it he'd just thought he'd be better off as the only Alpha, although generally people didn't notice he was forming a pack. Danielle was the first to notice and call him out about it. "I see you've been doing your homework." Ralph commented with a smile, it meant a lot to him that Dani had clearly done her research about Wolf Packs. "You do realize that the two Alpha wolves are normally a breeding pair, and we're not...you know..." Ralph commented, it was just a fact more than anything else. It looked like somebody needed to give the big guy a clue bat to the head. Dani wasn't the kind of girl to come out and say that she liked a guy and this was the closest she figured she would ever get to that. Sure she wasn't interested in what part of that implies, but what sixteen year old really was? Babies were definitely not in the cards for her right now, but everything else she was oddly on board with. She actually liked Ralph. Whatever, it didn't matter...much. "Put me down, I think I can walk from here to my dorm." she probably couldn't in reality, but she would rather try than sit there and feel embarrassed.

Ralph is very often mistaken for being dense rather than other people being vague. Ralph gave her a questioning look but placed her down on the ground anyway, his hands lingered around her small frame because Ralph was certain she wasn't going to manage walking back to her dorm. "I know what you are trying to tell me Dani." Ralph said once she was down. He could sense the small changes in Dani when she saw him, that's how he knew but he wasn't sure how he should react, how a human would react. Dani rolled her eyes and tried to push away from him to walk away, but stumbled almost right off. If she had been dressed in something more than her swimsuit then she could've used her power and her belt to help keep her balance. Unfortunately that just wasn't the case because swimming with a belt on would not have been her brightest idea to date. "When you figure it out, you let me know." She finally gritted out through clenched teeth when she righted herself. After a few tentative steps she had worked through it enough to get in to a rhythm. Breathe, step, breathe, step. As long as she didn't do both at the same time, she'd be fine enough.
