I CAN SEE YOUR BROKEN WINGS
He hadn’t spotted his roommate yet, but then Gage hadn’t stayed a night in his own dorm the last two nights he’d been in Calloway. The first night, he had stayed up the entire night just running around outside and exploring the town. It wasn’t too much different from what he remembered, but the familiar faces he had seen when he was in high school here had almost all changed.
Naturally, after a loopy night of cruising the park and hitting the bars before they closed in Calloway, Gag spent the next day sleeping it off in his bed. When he woke up in the mid-afternoon, him roommate was not around so he just showered and headed right out the door. That night, he’d met some brunette in the student union who was determined to ‘show him around’ and, needless to say, he didn’t make it back to his bed that night.
Now, he was running back up the stairs, his hair that perfect amount of messy to suggest that he hadn’t even thought about it at all, even though he had spent a good portion of the morning running his fingers through it and getting it wet to that it might sit just right. As if like clockwork, just as his foot touched the second floor threshold, the door to room 202 swung open and the blonde girl from before fell out of the room, giggling to someone on the phone.
Her hair was pulled into a high ponytail and she looked like she might have been planning a trip to the gym. She stopped and stared at him a second after ramming into him full force. Someone on the other end of the line asked a question that came across to him like a garbled mess of words, and she quickly said her goodbyes and hung up. Her blue eyes narrowed at him and she stepped back to create a bit of space between them, “Sorry.” She said, wincing with her words like running into him had been painful.
Gage raised an eyebrow and shook his head, “You know…” He grinned a devilish grin at the blonde, “…This is the second time we have run into each other like this. Must be fate.” He then reached a hand out, offering to a handshake, “I’m Gage.”
She narrowed her eyes and smiled like she knew something he didn’t before returning the handshake, “Unfortunately, Gage, you are not the only person I run into in the hallway all the time. How could I possibly know which one is my soul mate, if the only requirement is that we have run into each other in the hallway?” She raised her blonde eye brows at him and laughed at her own statement, “Raelynn, by the way.”
Reached his hand up to his chest in mock pain, Gage shook his head, “Rae-lynn.” His voice bounced over her name like it was the most beautiful name in history, “You’re killing me. Why can’t you just accept that we were fated to meet like this?” His voice was dripping in sarcasm as he leaned against the wall, blocking her path to the stairs. She bit her lower lip, which he thought was extremely sexy, and shook her head like she wasn’t sure how to respond to his flirtation.
After a moment of awkward silence, he grinned and shook it off, moving on with the conversation, “So what’s you’re deal, Raelynn?” He hovered on her name for a moment, enunciating his words. It was like every time he said her name, her face would grow a deeper shade of red.
Shrugging, Raelynn narrowed her eyes mischievously and grinned, “Depends.” She stated matter-of-factly, “What’s yours?” She crossed her arms in front of her chest, unknowingly pushing her breasts closer together and deepening her cleavage. Gage didn’t try to hide the fact the he was checking her out when she did this.
“My deal?” He asked, rubbing the back of his neck with his hand, “Oh, you know, making you fall for me.” Generally this made girls erupt into a burst of giggles as they assured him that would never happen in that voice that meant it already had. But this girl just shook her head and looked down, biting her lower lip again. She stepped back just a fraction of an inch, probably hoping he wouldn’t notice her sudden retreat, but of course he did, “Whoa.” He held up both of his hands with his palms facing her, “What did I say?”
Raelynn’s face showed every little thing she thought, clear as day. Her blues eyes went from a sad sort of longing to guilt for making him feel like she was rejecting him outright. She opened her mouth to say something but no words came out, leaving Gage wondering what she could possibly be thinking about. Raelynn opened her mouth again and sighed before finally saying, “Sorry. I don’t know what’s wrong with me.” Her telling expressions suddenly melted into a fake smile that she had obviously practiced for years of her life, “Trust me, I don’t think that’s going to happen.”
Sure, the words she used were the exact same ones all the other girls from years past had used after he dropped that line on them, but for some reason, her tone or her facial expression told him that she was completely serious. Her sapphire eyes were chaotic with thoughts of someone else. While most guys would have shied away, Gage couldn’t help but become even more intrigued by her, “So who is he?” He asked without thinking. Part of him was wondering what the hell kind of question that was, but the other part of him wanted to know so he just let it happen.
Raelynn look taken aback by his sudden inquiry, frowning and looking away like she didn’t want him to be staring at her or something, “Who?” She asked, obviously knowing what he meant but trying to play it off like she had no idea.
“The guy.” He said, playing along with her feigned misunderstanding, “He’s either your boyfriend…” He paused for a moment to judge her reaction to his words, “…or he broke you heart.” She couldn’t hide a thing from her expressions. It was more than clear that whoever the guy was, he broke her heart and she wasn’t over it. Gage pushed off the wall and reached into his pocket, pulling out the business card he used to use in the military, which had his cell phone number printed on it in small, neat letters, “Listen, a guy who doesn’t understand that you’re the hottest girl in town doesn’t deserve that…” He pointed at her face, “…sort of reaction out of you.” He held out his card between two fingers and winked at her, “Call me sometime. I can help you forget.” She reached out and took the card, clearly out of politeness, before he stepped out of her way and let her continue slowly down the stairs, glancing over her shoulder at him like she didn’t know exactly what to think.
