PERSONALITY DESCRIPTION | Charlie comes off as very quiet when people first meet her. She dislikes large crowds and so she likes to find small places without many people to spend her time. She takes her bike everywhere and enjoys spending her time sketching things she sees while out. Charlie is shy, but not unfriendly. She isn't likely to be the first to approach a stranger, but has no trouble to talking to people she already knows. She is a cheerful person who is rarely in a bad mood. An optimist, Charlie prefers looking on the bright side of situations. She is very unlikely to get into confrontations with other people due to her slightly withdrawn personality and so tends to avoid addressing people when they have irritated her. Instead she usually just ignores the person. She loves being active, as evidenced by her bike riding and archery, but avoids team sports because she dislikes the aggression that tends to come with them. She'd much prefer to cheer on her team than join them. Charlie has bouts of insomnia that cause her to stay up at late hours which in turn leads to her disliking waking up early and can also lead to her being tired during the day. Her favorite thing to do to relax herself on particularly hard days is sit down with a cup of tea and watch bad television. |
ALL THE SMALL THINGS
POWER | Mediumship |
POWER DESCRIPTION | Charlie can see and speak to dead people. She doesn't chose which dead people she can interact with and it seems to be entirely dependent on the spirit in question. To her, the spirits appear as very translucent people. She is unable to physically interact with spirits and the connection, being dependent on the spirit, can be broken at any time. Sometimes Charlie has found that specific objects or places can help the bond and in some cases she is actually able to call out to a specific spirit making it more likely she will be able to see them. Her abilities don't tire her out physically or mentally when she is using them passively. However, when she actually makes an effort to call a spirit or try and hold the connection longer she can get tired very easily. |
SPECIAL ITEMS | Charlie carries around a small elephant charm on a necklace that was her grandmother's. It helps to calm her down if she is having a rough experience due to her ability. |
SOMEBODY THAT I USED TO KNOW
CHARACTER HISTORY | Charlie grew up in a pretty well off family in upstate New York. It was a small town and her family lived in a house that had been in her fathers family for years. Her only close relatives were a grandmother on her father's side and some cousins on her mother's side who lived all the way in California. When she was a little girl, Charlie was very boisterous and loved to climb all over the furniture. At the age of five she fell onto a glass table in their living room and had to get stitches just under her left knee. She was forced to do quieter less physical activities for a while as he healed and she picked up drawing since her grandmother on her father's side was an artist and would watch her while her parents were at work. Being a shy kid growing up even as active as she was, and having no siblings, Charlie spent a lot of time with her grandmother and parents. Her mother taught her archery to channel her energy into and her father would take her a long bike rides on weekends. She did well in school, although she always had trouble in math. Her grandmother died when she was fourteen and was the first spirit she ever saw. Charlie was hiding away upstairs during the wake when she looked up to find her grandmother standing there. Her grandmother was all too aware she was dead and told Charlie to look in her old jewelry box. Charlie found the small elephant charm. She spent the rest of the wake speaking to her grandmother and managing to stay quite calm about the whole situation. Afterwards she went to her parents and told them everything. They told her she had probably had a dream and that they were happy she had found a way to say goodbye to her grandmother never the less. Charlie never blamed her parents for not believing her. In the next weeks as her abilities became more and more apparent to herself, she merely told her parents the encounters as if they were dreams she had had. They never quite fully believed her, but as time went on were far more open to believing she might have some sort of strange something to her 'dreams'. If nothing else, Charlie was always glad her parents never tried to put her on any medications or tell her she was crazy. They merely accepted it as a quirk she might have as an imaginative girl. She was sixteen when her parents received a letter inviting Charlie to join Ashford academy. When the recruiter showed up and explained that the academy was a place for young people with similar 'quirks' Charlie's parents were unsure. However, when Charlie told them she really wanted to attend, they agreed that it might be for the best. They made her promise that she would write to them and call to check in often as well as agree that they might visit her and she would come home for at least parts of her breaks. With that Charlie officially entered Ashford Academy. |
THE HOUSE THAT BUILT ME
MOTHER | Margaret Ella DeBois - 43 - English Teacher - Charlie has a strong connection with her mother. She learned archery from her mother and looks up to her as an example of a strong woman who knows her own mind. Growing up she got into very few fights with her mother and they were usually over Charlie being stubborn about something and neither of them backing down from their stance. However the arguments were usually more passive aggressive than anything else and blew over easily when they both sat down and explained why they felt the way they did. In that way, Charlie has always had a good relationship with her mother because she liked that she was treated like an adult and someone who had valuable opinions. |
FATHER | Alan Wright Able - 46 - Accountant - Although Charlie is much closer to her mother in personality, she was also very close with her father. They both enjoyed spending time bike riding with each other and when she was angry with her mother her father was the first person she could talk to about it. A very mild man, her father was always excellent at seeing both sides of an argument and giving her advice on how to reconcile. In this way, while her mother was someone to look up to, her father was someone she knew would always give her level headed advice. |
