To travel, all he has to do is think of a destination and then focus on a solid object in front of him. At that point, the vortex opens on his end. Usually he prefers to use a wall or the sidewalk because something like glass or grass can be too fragile or unstable.
As far as carrying an object or taking someone with him, Alex has no issues as long as they grab on to him fast enough. Anything much bigger than him that can't move itself through the portal can get awkward and is in danger of getting cut off. people don't have this problem as much because they can stoop or jump, but it is a vague possibility.
The downfalls of Alex's power aren't usually major, but they can have some serious issues. For example, if he tries to use an unstable surface, he can lose the portal too early or have problems on reentering. Unstable surfaces mean unstable landings that can be painful because of excessive force or falling upside down or sideways. Also, he must go through the portal once it is opened no matter what.
