[attr="class","wbascr"] Even though her brother was finally out of the hospital, Melanie was a little shaken up by his stint in ICU. Words like rehab had been thrown around until her father flew in to say that everything would be handled. As long as he was around Octavia, taking alex off of the drugs completely wouldn't be possible. That meant for now that they would just have to keep an eye on him and wait, much to Melanie's dismay.
Clearing her head was a necessary evil, even if she had done it with about a dozen bridal magazines and a pen in hand to appease her mother. She was expecting them in the mail by the next weekend and she still had several more to go through. Planning a wedding wasn't easy, especially when you weren't in love.
A flash of her home in Texas, covered in beautiful lights and her back yard prepared for a warm ceremony flashed thorugh her mind and made her want to cry. If this was really her dream wedding, that's where they would be. Her colors would be more rustic instead of black and silver and her Grandfather would have been proud. Now she was getting married just outside of Calloway and things had never looked more bleak. Homesickness took over her mind as she found a bench in the park to sit and and flipped open a magazine, marking out things she hated and circling the things she would tolerate. This was going to be a long day.  Daniel had just managed to arrive in America and unpack his bags, however the fact of being in a new place did little to refrain him from immediately taking to the outdoors to explore. He had never heard of Calloway until the principle had informed him and his parents of Ashford's location years ago, and despite the fact that a good majority of his daytime would be spent confined within the walls of the building in a classroom setting, he decided that seeing the sights that the school was surrounded by outweighed the idea of getting to know the school itself. If truth be told, Daniel would have preferred to remain in Spain, and continue with his normal schooling, for normal people, with normal classes, and for what was to him, in a normal language. Unfortunately that was anything but the case, and instead he found himself itching to get outside.
He had to admit that the Calloway area was a cozy, little spot, and as a soon as he got word of a park being nearby, he decided to launch himself its direction in hopes of getting to see what the town would be like when he decided that once again the time had come to escape school. As he made his way through the the children's play set and into the gardens, a thick feeling of displacement settled himself in the center of his stomach like maple syrup. While new places were always interesting, it had finally sank in that he couldn't just turn around and head home before the sunset like he usually did when he walked the streets. Instead he would be turning to another foreign area, one that housed people with who knew what kinds of crazy abilities that could be utilized in equally as insane ways. He silently watched as people went about their day, simple things such as an elderly couple taking a seat at a bench for a short rest easily catching his attention. However, the couple of aging elders who had began to feed the wild fauna wasn't the only thing that had reeled him in. A few yards over, a girl sat on her lonesome, a magazine sprawled in her lap and a pen fiercely working at his pages. Even from a distance he could notice her distress, and as he took several steps closer, her face became something familiar as well.
At first he simply stood there, eyeing the girl over multiple times in an attempt to ensure that he did in fact know her. He could figure that she didn't resemble an old friend from Spain, because if she did he would immediately have been able to place a name, even if it wasn't a correct one, but instead she resembled someone he had met previously- more specifically when he had technically first arrived in America for his father's job. No way, it's impossible,he thought to himself, a small smile creeping across his face. Even if it was her, he found the situation funny how it would be to actually encounter her in such a situation, until she finally glanced up, and he was for sure that he had either found her identical lookalike, or she was the exact same girl he had practiced his English speaking skills with. "Hi, not to be odd, but you look really similar to a girl I know," he greeted after completely making his way over.

Maybe a church would be better than those lovely gardens a few hours away. This was way too complicated for her. Setting the pen down beside her, she looked up and then froze for a moment in shock. Hola Daniel. She greeted with a bright smile, standing up to face the person she hadn't seen in years. She'd almost forgotten their conversation in broken english years ago. Her spanish had improved, but only slightly. That thick accent of hers kept getting in the way of her being able to properly form the words. Like a high relationship?" now it was his turn to question if he was speaking correct vocabulary, his expression immediately changed from excited to confused. Perhaps his friend was older than he thought, that or she had really came to the conclusion that she had found the one. "Who is Richard Gaunt? Is he nice? You feel love?" he barraged her with an onslaught of questions. He had never expected Melanie to be married within a year of meeting her, but he had once heard a saying about unknown things happening behind closed doors. If things go according to my mother's plan, I'll be married to him forever, but the end of summer. She explained the best that she could. The language barrier wasn't nearly as bad this time around as it was before, but she was still worried about things going over his head. No, I don't love Richard. He's the heir to another big family and our families arranged the marriage without my consent. He's nice enough, but he's not the person I love. Which means no, I don't have kids with him. We've only kissed when mother expects it.

Daniel's face dropped even further at the mention of an arranged marriage. He could tell that Melanie was obviously displeased with the arrangement, and the fact that it was over economical and possibly social means only aided in his own discontent over the entire situation. "Oh, I see..." he flatly replied, his eyes breaking from hers and back to the ring that encircled her finger on which it was placed upon. He wasn't one to be actively against arranged marriages, because some customs had the tradition of doing so, and each participate actively partook just as much as two couples who were truly in love did, however this wasn't about following cultural tradition from as far as he could tell. "What are you going to do? Are you really getting married?" he questioned. He didn't expect Melanie to be the type to pull some daredevil stunt and hit the highway on the wedding day, but he also didn't want to see her be forced into something she wasn't willing to do.
However, Melanie's experience did bring something to the Spanish teen's mind. They were both from somewhat similar economically gifted families, and in complete honesty it wouldn't have surprised him if his parents took the same course of action. It would have certainly disappointed him, but seeing how it was an actual reality before him, the outlandish of it all actually occurring now seemed dangerously close and realistic. |

The dress, the venue, everything had already been picked out and the invitations were sent. Regardless, it won't last. I won't let it. I have a life to live and I refuse to let it involve a husband I don't love.

Don't worry about the joke, it doesn't bother me at all. She laughed, looking around town to try and find some inspiration. There definitely wasn't much to do which was depressing when she thought about it being her friend's first experience in the US on his own. Well, it's quiet here. We'll have to get you to a bigger city for some real fun I think. Calloway is just too...tiny. Especially for someone who spent the majority of their life traveling from one huge city to another, this place was just stupid small. They needed something interesting to do for sure.

"Oh, that's fine," he replied, forcing a smile across his face. He didn't want to act too negatively against the place, it was going to be his temporary home for the next few years at least. "We could always go exploring later if you ever want to," he invited her. He secretly hoped that she did take his invitation into serious consideration, instead of passing it off as simply jibberish to fill a conversing hole. He did want to see what America had to offer, especially since his father had told him that the place had many opportunities, and that he was fortunate to get to spend time there and experience the culture firsthand at such a young age. |
