APPEARANCE DESCRIPTION | Isabel is rather lanky looking, her slim frame not combining well with her height. Her natural hair is a light, sandy brown, though she hasn't let that colour show for a good few years, preferring to dye her locks a series of bright, often fiery colours. Her pale skin speaks of one who doesn't see the sun all that often, though she does get out more often than her appearance would suggest. Her clothing style can be described as eclectic at best and completely disjointed at worst. She is a lifetime member of the casual clothing crowd, preferring t-shirts, jackets and pullovers to dresses or anything more elegant. As far as her lower half, jeans are the usual preference, though shorts and skirts are both acceptable should the weather permit it. Isabel's clothing has mostly been scavenged from thrift stores and second hand bins, and features bands she's never listened to, brands she's never heard of, and an odd mix of styles that combine into something almost punkish but not quite.. at least not all the time. |
BEYOND THE LOOKING GLASS
LIKES | - Music: Of all kinds.. or mostly all kinds. She tries to find something good even in genres she can't enjoy. - Animation: Cartoons, Japanese animation, animatics, general moving drawings. Whether CG or hand drawn, animated media possesses a creative quality that live action can't copy. - Movies: Again, the genre doesn't really matter. It's the artistic expression that matters; a movie is a coming together of many great talents, all applying their special skills to make something fun and entertaining. - Novels/Fiction: Another great outlet for imagination, a book can draw you into it like a movie or TV show never can. - Art: Though she'd never consider herself a connoisseur, she can't help but love expression through artistic means. She's not such a fan of the art scene, but it's easy enough to avoid that and just focus on the works themselves. - Photography: Specifically the natural kind, the sort that an amateur takes of the world around them. Posed shots in studios or controlled sets are all well and good, but they lack the raw creativity of an unscripted piece. - Sugar & Caffeine: Anything that provides on demand energy to her body is aces in her book. High fibre cereals and orange juice may be better in the long run, but nothing wakes you up like a mug of coffee and big bowl of cotton candy puffs. - People: In as much of an observant sense as an interpersonal one. Isabel is certainly a very social person, but she takes as much joy in people watching as she does in conversing. - Video Games: The ultimate entertainment medium. They're imaginative, interactive, and hold such creativity and variety that there's never an excuse to be bored. Well, maybe not never. - Colour: Why be black and boring when you can be bright and vibrant? There are so many shades and tones in the world, how can you go through life without appreciating them? - Her family: Sure, they might be on a different wavelength to her, and they might not always see eye to eye as a result, but they're still hers, and she's theirs. - Creativity: It's probably no surprise at this point, but Isabel loves to see someone express themselves in any manner. Whether it's poem from the heart or a crazy mural, if you're out to be creative you have Issie's seal of approval. - Dancing: Expression through movement. Pure, simple feeling translated into motion. It gets your heart pumping and lets you forget your troubles. - Animals: Most of them, anyway. There aren't any pretences with animals. They act the way they're supposed to act, they don't hide behind facades, they don't lie, they don't double-cross or backstab.. at least for the most part. |
DISLIKES | - Pretentiousness: There's too much emphasis placed on status these days, especially within artistic communities. This is the one thing that ruins things for Isabel. She enjoys the arts, but often hates the people themselves. - Anyone who looks down on others: It doesn't matter if you're rich, or smart, or strong, or whatever. You aren't better than her, or anyone else. - Mornings: Truly the worst time of day. It might have something to do with her terrible sleeping pattern and tendency to stay awake even when she knows she has to be up the next morning, but she won't ever admit that. - Two-faced people: Isabel may not always be the most honest person, but she doesn't ever deceive people for the purpose of manipulating them. She doesn't understand why people would waste the time pretending to be nice to someone they dislike. - Reality Television: "Hey, lets all look at these crazy, weird or unusual people doing their crazy, weird or unusual things!" We could have any number of new exciting dramas or hilarious comedies, but instead we have another season of plastic people being plastic. Great. - Being described as 'artsy' or 'hipster': Sure, she may fit the trends, the descriptions may be technically accurate in that sense, but there's are certain other implications that come with those terms that she'd rather avoid. - Being a 'Jack of All Trades': She can sing adequately, dance reasonably well, draw decently, write with some skill, play guitar to an acceptable degree, but there isn't really any area in which she excels. She has the basic talents, but can't pin down which to follow and make her own. - Cold without snow: What's even the point? Winter is cold so that it can snow and make everything beautiful. Without the snow all you've got is the hassle of putting on extra layers, and cold rain, which is the worst. - Essays/Papers/Theses: It's great that someone can write that much about a subject, really it is... but do I have to read it? The standard structure is repetitive, as is the language more often than not, and it just takes forever to get to the point. - Overused Stereotypes: Yes, they serve a purpose... but can we not have some more variation? It seems for every one great, original character or setting or plot premise there are fifty copies of the same thing clogging up the creative space. - Cliched Romances: Even worse than your standard stereotype or cliche, the romance cliche combines a whole bunch of stereotypes, tired plot points and boring twists that everyone can see coming a mile away. Will the guy get the girl? Yes. Done. Next story please. - Her full first name, and her middle name: Isabel just doesn't sound really fit her properly.. and Marie just seems a little too old fashioned. - Being Proven Wrong: It's not that she thinks she's right all the time, it's just that she really would like to be. - Apologising: Not in a 'whoops, I just bumped into you' way, but in a deeper, meaningful way. After an argument, or an insult too far, or something of the sort. She hates backing down, and apologising means realising that she's done wrong. - Work: It's not so much the act of working, it's the label of work itself. As soon as it becomes something that has to be done, Issie finds herself trying her best to do anything but. |
BEST SUBJECT | English |
WORST SUBJECT | History |
STRENGTHS | - Outgoing: Isabel is a social person, and finds it easy to mix and mingle with people. - Imaginative: She loves coming up with new and exciting ideas, or adding to the ideas of others. - Independent: Ok, so maybe she's not entirely ready to set out on her own, what with not having a job and not really wanting to get one, but she always manages to make her own way, and seldom needs to rely on others. - Artistic Skill: She's no master, but she has enough skill in a number of artistic disciplines... now if only she could tap into and improve upon that skill. - Critique: In a technical sense, she's terrible. She doesn't know the correct terms, she can't make adequate comparisons with other artists and she'd rather say nothing at all than put her criticism down in a properly structured and researched piece, but on an emotional level she just understands things. The intent of the artist, the emotion in a piece, the feelings it evokes, she's pretty expert at picking these out. - Loyal: Like a cute puppy... or rabid attack dog, Isabel sticks fiercely by those she counts as friends. She recognises and accept their flaws, with an understanding that they're doing the same with her. - Resourceful: Isabel is surprisingly good at improvising and utilising limited items. She's no Macgyver, but she can do more with little than most. - Finding a bargain: When you don't have much, you learn how to make every penny count. Sure, those jeans might not be the hottest new branded pair to come out of whatever designer's sketchbook, but they cost less than a bottle of water. |
WEAKNESSES | - Stubborn: Never back down can be a good motto to live by, but there are times when you should just give in, stop fighting and let the point slide. Isabel has yet to realise this. Even when she does realise it, she often can't let whatever issue is at hand go without a fight. - Lazy: Yep, who'd have thought the girl who doesn't like mornings would be a little lazy? So many of Isabel's interests can be experienced from within her room, so a lot of the time there's no real need or motivation for her to leave. - Jealous: This is one aspect of her personality that she's particularly ashamed of. Usually it's hidden, kept deep down, stored out of sight. It seldom becomes an issue, but occasionally she'll find herself looking at some stunning young beauty or rich kid with his fancy car and think 'why them? Why not me?' - Cheapskate: More born out of necessity than anything else, Isabel has learned what you can get for cheap and what you can get for free. She'll quite often try to pay with favours (no, not that kind), and when she can't, will look for a way of trading or bartering rather than parting with money. - Blunt: Isabel doesn't often mince her words. She tries not to be cruel with her speech, but it's quite hard for her to find the right words to say something (or someone) sucks without just saying it sucks. If she had to pick her least favourite commonly uttered phrase, it would be 'no offence'. - Dealing with Authority: She doesn't set out to rebel just for the sake of it, but when she's asked to do something she likes to be given a reason. If that reason isn't adequate, she'll likely kick up a fuss. - Borrowing Money: 'I swear, I'll pay you back when i can' is a phrase you might hear Isabel utter as she pockets that $10 bill you just gave her, and while she genuinely does intend to follow up on that promise, things don't often work out that way. |
HOBBIES | - Watching movies - Playing/listening to music - Wandering and people-watching - Playing video games - Hunting for a bargain at a cheap store - Drawing/sketching - Browsing the net, especially art sites - Taking photos |
PET PEEVES | - haughty/superior/pretentious attitudes: You may think you're a big deal, but that doesn't give you a right to look down on anyone else, their opinions or their work. - People talking in circles: If you take three sentences to make your point, and you do that by reiterating the same thing in three different ways, then prepare to be interrupted. - People being two-faced or deceptive: You spend all your time being nice to people you hate, and for what? Because they're the popular crowd? Because you want to use them for something? At least when Issie takes something she's up front about it. |
PERSONALITY DESCRIPTION | Issie is a dreamer. She's all about emotion, expression, art in its purest form. She loves the music that makes her move, the movies that scare you to death, the books that bring you to tears, and the games that have you throwing your controller in frustration. Life is all about what you think and feel for Isabel, and she delights in collecting various thoughts and feelings in various forms of media, from movies and TV shows, to music, to art. Because of this love of creation and expression of emotion, Issie has a great dislike of anything that corrupts those things: specifically the culture surrounding them. Too many critics of all art forms have grown pretentious and jaded, and have lost touch with what made them fall in love with their preferred medium in the first place. Isabel does occasionally consider a career as a critic, but fears that she too might fall into this trap and lose her enthusiasm. Those who observe her would likely consider this idea laughable though, as her enthusiasm is relentless and often overflowing. Even though she does have a tendency towards laziness, when she gets going she's like a coiled spring, brimming with energy. Issie is open and friendly to most at first glance. She's not immune to first impressions, but even if someone doesn't look like her type she'll try to ignore her preconceptions and at least give them a chance. As a friend she is cheerful and loyal, encouraging people to come out of their shells more and enjoy life. She'll do almost anything for a close friend, though she'll still complain if it means that she has to get up before noon. Issie is from a rather poor background, and as such has learned all the best ways for making every penny count. She isn't above asking others to foot the bill for her, though she'll always offer some kind of repayment. It's part of her personal moral code to always repay a kindness shown to you, though she's rather lenient on how that repayment can be made. One guilty tendency that she has is borrowing money from people. She'll seldom be able to repay what she owes, and has to resort to owing people favours or good will, which isn't really ideal for either party. Like every other human being, Isabel is not without her flaws. She's stubborn to a fault, often continuing to argue a point long after she realises she's wrong. She has a problem blindly following authority if she can't see the reason behind it, and even when she's admitted that she's wrong it's difficult for her to apologise for it. Her enthusiasm can get the better of her and lead to her saying or doing things that she may regret. She wears her heart on her sleeve, and while she's not easy to insult, she's also terrible at hiding when something has hit her hard. If Isabel takes a disliking to you, she won't try to hide it. While she won't actively seek out confrontation, she won't hesitate to make her opinion of you known if you approach her. Never one to mince words, her insults for people she dislikes can come as thick and fast as her praise of someone or something she likes. |
ALL THE SMALL THINGS
POWER | Photokinesis: Light Creation & Direction |
POWER DESCRIPTION | Simply put, Isabel has the ability to create light from nothing. She requires no materials, though the amount of concentration required to maintain the light varies depending on the complexity and intensity of the light. Her ability allows her to create a single point of light, which she can brighten, dim, and (to a certain degree) direct at will, or to brighten an entire area. Creating light takes energy, and requires some degree of concentration. Energy is not drained immediately, but builds up, growing into fatigue and tiredness. Extended use of her power will not only leave Issie exhausted, but will affect her even after she rests, leaving her with a headache, hunger and dizziness. Sleep after taxing use of her power is never restful, and often leaves her feeling worse, almost like a hangover. Issie finds working with white light rather difficult, as it is more intense than using a single colour, and as such creating a light of equal brightness will cause far more fatigue. As such, she prefers to isolate a particular part of the colour spectrum when creating light, creating, for example, a red spotlight concentrated on a certain area, or lighting up a dark room with a dim green glow. The degree to which Isabel can direct the light she creates varies depending on its brightness and intensity. She is capable of lighting a room to the same degree as an average lightbulb for some time, but concentrating the same amount light on a single spot would build up sufficient fatigue to affect her after less than an hour. She is ale to create a light at a single point and extend it in a set direction much like a laser pointer or strobe light, and can even change that direction, though this obviously causes more fatigue. Issie has no control at all over existing light sources, and so is unable to dim or darken an already lit area. Lighter places also make the use of her power all the more difficult, since she has to create brighter lights in order to make them seen. This power is mostly limited to non-harmful uses. While she is capable of causing temporary blindness with bright flashes of light, repeated or sustained brightness can cause her to become exhausted in less than a minute. Issie mostly utilises her powers to create light shows, making flashes of light in the style and pattern of fireworks, strobe or disco lights, and other such minor effects. |
SPECIAL ITEMS | Issie always wears a St. Mary pendant that once belonged to her grandmother. |
SOMEBODY THAT I USED TO KNOW
CHARACTER HISTORY | Isabel's life started, as all lives do, with the coming together of two people. Angela and Gordon Rosemary had met through a mutual friend, and clicked with each other perfectly. Both were down to earth, hard working, dedicated and loyal. They both worked long hours at thankless jobs; she cleaning and tidying in a hotel and later a hospital, and he fact and figure checking at an accountancy firm. They made little money, and their luck was such that they were never really able to save up too much. They bought a house, but it as old and needed many repairs throughout their time there. Their car seemed cursed, some part or another always on the verge of disintegration. But they managed, together. A few years after their marriage, Isabel was born. She was their light, their little darling, and they did everything they could to provide for her. They didn't have the money for fancy toys or full time nannies, so they made do with what they could, and trusted their daughter to Gordon's mother when they were both busy. She was a kind, gentle old woman, strong of faith and full of love. Under her care, and the care of her parents, Isabel grew into an energetic and carefree young girl. A few years after Isabel was born, the Evans family's second child arrived. Amelia was quieter than her older sister, more reserved and controlled, even from a young age. The two got along well, though Isabel could be a little overbearing on the younger girl. Their lives were relatively stable until shortly after the family's eldest child turned six. It was at this time that she fell ill to meningitis. The medical bills alone were almost enough to ruin the family, and added to the cost of running a home and a car, Gordon and Angela were left with no choice but to borrow long term. There was a tense period in the family's history where everything hung in the balance, ready to tip one way or another. The catalyst was, thankfully, Isabel's recovery. It was slow, but sure, and even though they were now in an even worse financial position, the Evans' celebrated. Isabel herself showed no signs of being affected by the disease long term, and was back to her old energetic self in no time. As she grew, she developed a cheerful, headstrong personality and an eclectic taste for the creative arts. She would draw, sing, tell stories, and spend countless hours reading and watching TV and movies. She made friends easily, and didn't seem to care that her family couldn't afford the fancy new TV or brand named clothing. She became quite adept at picking out clothing sized just for her at the thrift stores the family would visit, and combining the various styles into a semi-cohesive whole. The girls grew older, and Isabel bounced from interest to interest, first writing poetry, then taking up singing, then learning guitar, then writing. She could never settle on one thing though, and ended up bearing an interest in many disciplines. At around age fifteen, she used the money saved up from christmas, her birthday, and her meagre allowance to buy a rather decent camera, adamant that she would be a photographer. That dream never came true, and the camera soon became outdated, but she kept it, carrying it with her most places 'just in case'. While Isabel could never settle on a single interest, her younger sister latched onto one from a young age and stuck with it: fashion. She couldn't afford the clothes themselves, so she would cut out pictures and stick them in a scrap book. She would watch fashion shows on TV, and scour the cheap stores for any of last season's best sellers. Though she was quiet and reserved, she was also poised and proper, quietly confident, and right often more than a match for Isabel when it came to their inevitable arguments. Issie was sixteen when her grandmother passed away. It happened quietly, the old woman dying in her sleep, found by her son the following day. It was saddening to the family, but hardly a shock. Margaret Evans had been unwell for some time, though she had kept her mind strong, and stayed independent until the very end. While Isabel's parents had been loving, neither of them had provided what the girl's grandmother had. Her father was financially oriented, businesslike, not overly affectionate, and her mother was a realist, trying to instil traditional values into her daughters and convince them of the value of hard work and the importance of finding a marketable skill to make into a profession. Isabel's grandmother, however, had let the creativity of both girls flourish. She would buy them art supplies, notebooks, movies and magazines, anything she could find relating to their interests. It had been because of her that Isabel's love of emotion and creativity had flourished as it had. Isabel's power didn't manifest until late in her life. She had been alone in the house with her sister, listening to music, dancing away in her room. The song she was listening to had just reached peak intensity when the light started to appear. She didn't notice them at first, engrossed as she was in the movement and the music. Her sister, passing by her door, had seen the light show through the crack in the door, opening it to find her older sibling dancing in her darkened room with her eyes closed while flashes of red, green and blue popped into existence around her. Shocked, Amelia had cried out in surprise, alerting Issie and ending the spectacle. It was not long after that the staff of Ashford academy found her. She had tried experimenting with her powers on her own, with limited success, but couldn't resist the opportunity to attend a school made especially for her and people like her. Her parents never knew about her power, being told instead that the position at Ashford was a scholarship for artistic students. As far as Isabel knows, her sister is the only one to keep her secret. It wasn't until after she arrived at the school though that she learned that some of her 'kind' had the ability to change and alter memories. |
THE HOUSE THAT BUILT ME
MOTHER | ANGELA ROSEMARY EVANS - 43 - HOSPITAL CLEANER - "She's... well, my Mom. We don't really see eye to eye on a lot of things, but I know she's got my best interests at heart, and she's always supported me when I needed it. I just wish she would get off my case sometimes." |
FATHER | GORDON MATTHEW EVANS - 45 - MANAGEMENT SUPPORT - "Me and my Dad aren't exactly close. He's kind of an 'arms length' kind of guy. He cares, sure, but... a little affection never went amiss, y'know? I know he's busy a lot, but... I'm still his daughter." |
SIBLINGS | AMELIA GRACE EVANS - 14 - STUDENT - SISTER - "She's a bit of a fashionista... I guess it's cool, not my style though. She's a good kid, and she hasn't let herself become a bitch, despite some of her friends." |
OTHER | MARGARET ANNE EVANS - 76 (Deceased) - RETIRED - GRANDMOTHER- "She was great. My parents always worked a lot, so she'd look after me. She'd encourage everything I did, she always knew what to say, how to calm me down or cheer me up. I'm not religious, but I hope she's found something close to the heaven she believed in." |
