It hadn't taken much for Melanie to convince even the most irritating members of the board that it was a horrible idea for her to marry Richard Gaunt over spring break once she finally thought of a decent reason. At first they had been shocked that they hadn't thought of the potential PR nightmare having a high school student marry a man in college would bring. After that, they listened to her demands a little closer. A summer time wedding would buy them all time to make sure this thing didn't go down for real, or try. That was all they could do. Try, try, and try again. Normal brides would be happy to do things like she was preparing for today, but Melanie was less than thrilled about driving down to the Lamar valley to taken "official engagement photos". Not to mention that today was the day she was supposed to be getting her engagement ring, the one she would wear all the way until the day of her wedding. Still, she couldn't complain much. The wedding colors were black and white, an elegant choice according to her mother and tasteful according to the board. Now all she had to do was smile at the photographer and hope that Rich was as good as an actor in front of those cameras as she was, otherwise they would both be in trouble. Still trying to wrap his head around the prospect of getting married, Rich sat in the car that was taking him to the site of the engagement photos. Thankfully they were able to push it till the summer, it would give them some time to try and figure out a way out of the whole situation. For today though he needed to play the part so no one suspected anything. He even went out and bought a nice engagement ring to complete the picture. He was twirling the small box in his hand. The whole situation was just wrong. He didn't often settle down in a relationship and the moment he was thinking about doing just that he gets news that he was going to get married. It really hit home with Rich, and he figured Melanie was hating this just as much as he was. At least he was just the groom to be. That meant he didn't really have to give too much input in the whole wedding scene, just show up to certain events and planing sessions. Rich didn't think he would be able to deal with all the planning insanity.
Upon arriving Rich donned his usual charming smile as he got out of the car and walked over to where Melanie and the photographer were. "Hope I am not late" He was charming as he gave Mel a small kiss on the cheek for show. "You look gorgeous as always dear" He added for good measure. He had to admit that she did look good in the dress. Right now it was about the appearance. He was hopping to be able to really talk with Mel alone to see what they could come up with. At least it was just engagement photos and the family wasn't there, that would have made things quite interesting, and not in a good way.

Richard's appearance made Melanie relax and tense up at the exact same time. If it had been anyone else then she would've been in deep trouble, but Melanie knew Rich and his family, especially his younger sister Briella. They were friends at the least, so things wouldnt be horrid if they had to spend a little time married. Long enough to figure things out with the least damage possible to their respective families and companies.
Giving him a bright smile that was all show, Melanie laced her arm with his and squeezed it tight, turnin to face the photographer who had already started snapping pictures to get some candid shots. The act was working so far. Morning sweetheart. We were just discussing what kind of photos we had in mind so that you and I could go look at that venue mother found a little early . Of course they probably wouldn't really go, but still. They had to make everyone believe they were spending time together, preferably as a happy couple and there was no way they would be able to make her believe that her parents weren't waitin for a full report from the photographer in their behavior.

Rich heard the clicks from the photographer's camera. It was a good thing they were good at the whole acting and deception part. He knew his parents were going to ask for a full report about what happened. A happy couple, right? Sure they knew each other but Rich knew that their relationship had been a bit rocky lately. Still it really didn't seem to hard to keep up the act. It was something he was used to by now. "Sounds great. I know the family is very eager to see the photos right away. I am quite excited myself to see this venue. Our mothers have been raving about it all morning" Rich added.
He had received a call from his own mother that morning about her going on about the venue and asking what ring he picked. All that was talked about was the wedding over the winter break. So much that his mother even incorporated Raven into the planing, as much as their mother hated to. Rich figured where they were was just fine to get the photos over with. He turned to face Mel and then got down on one knee for the perfect photo when he got the nod from the photographer. "Melanie Thorn, will you marry me?" He asked as scripted as he held out the open ring box offering the girl the engagement ring.

The ring really was beautiful, something she would've chosen for herself if the circumstances were different. For a moment she was mesmerized by the way it glinted in the sunlight, forgetting that this was rich and that the photographer was busy clicking away on her camera. Maybe that made her reaction better, losing herself in the moment and pretending that it was someone else. oh, Rich....yes. Yes of course. She whispered, tears pricking at the corners of her eyes as she smiled down at her now fiancé and held out her hand for him to slide the ring on. The photographer was just eating the whole ting up, babbling quietly about how beautiful these shots would look in the magazines.

He was impressed by Mel's reactions. Granted he got the ring thinking about what she would actually want. Sure his mother was going on about something simple yet elegant. But Rich had other ideas when shopping. He needed to make sure no one suspected he wasn't into the whole marriage idea. He would never buy a simple ring for the one he love so why would he start now. He knew his mother would call the black diamond a bold choice but this was nothing traditional. Rich slipped the ring on her finger knowing that it would fit perfectly. He smiled as he stood and gently placed his hands on her shoulder before kissing her forehead for one more candid photo.
Rich turned to the Photographer, holding his hand out for his now fiancé. "Well I do believe that is all the pictures for now. We have a venue to check out and wedding planning details to discuss" He said hoping to get some time to talk with Mel without the risk of someone overhearing. "I don't believe a menu has been decided on yet, right Dear?" He continued playing along as his phone buzzed in his pocket. It was either his mother or it was Virg asking about the photos. He decided to ignore it. Either way it wasn't important right now.

Melanie moved to walk towards the car Rich had arrived in, intending to ride back with him so they could talk, but before they made it far the photographer stopped them. Apparently the mothers wanted somethin immediately, which was confirmed when her own phone went off a few seconds later. Yes mother, of course. Give us a few seconds and I'll send you something. Yes. I'll make sure to send it to mrs- i mean, mother Gaunt as well. as soon as her mother was placated, she handed the phone to the photographer and pulled Richard close, smiling up at him. Even her high heels barely made up for the height difference, but it was aesthetically pleasing at least. Her phone clicked, but the exasperated look from the photographer let her know the families were looking for something more. Groaning mentally, she stood on her tiptoes and placed a chaste kiss against rich's lips, her outward composure never breaking.

The kiss was to be expected. He figured that the mothers wanted some extra proof. That didn't mean he had to enjoy it. Rich was still putting on the act but mentally he was really dreading the whole thing. A couple of year ago he wouldn't have cared. There was a time when he was all about bettering the business. But lately he was starting to see thing differently. Maybe it was because of Ashford or maybe it was because of his sister. He wasn't sure why but now he didn't care how this might help the families it was wrong and needed to not happen. He placed a hand on the small of her back and one on her cheek to give a better illusion. He pulled away and opened the car door for Mel making sure to smile. "Any more photos and there won't be anything interesting to take at the wedding itself" He teased hoping to get going. This was really starting to drag out and he was not sure how much longer he could put up the whole facade.
"Let's go check out this venue and then discuss wedding details over lunch. What do you say dear" He asked Melanie. He was hoping she would help move this whole thing on so they wouldn't have to deal with the families pestering them too much. A couple little shows here and there was enough to make their families think everything was going on swimmingly.

Of course love. She grinned, taking her phone back from the photographer before sliding in to the car. Once she made sure the driver couldn't hear them, Melanie sighed and looked at Rich apologetically. I was hoping we'd get away with minimal PDA, but it appears our mothers are actually together, waiting for something to come through. It's almost sick, really. She explained, leaning back in the seat to fiddle with the ring on her finger. She wondered how much thought he had put in to it. Her name was derived from the Greek word Melanthios, meaning dark flower, so anything flower related was oddly fitting. Still, she'd try to not dwell on it much. Ive got them stalled until late July, but that's the best I could do. How are things going on your end?

Rich got into the spacious car after telling the driver where to go. He waited a moment before finally relaxing slightly. "Hey don't apologize it is their own greed that got us into this mess" Rich finally stated. The soft grin was gone, replaced by a more solemn look. Rich checked his phone making sure to let his mother know that the pictures would be over momentarily. He looked over the latest email with his father sighing slightly. "I wish I had better news. I really do. But it seams like every time I try to find some way out it is just the same story. Father only cares about the business so unless I can convince him that us not marrying is better for the families then us being together he doesn't want to hear it. And thus the research continues" He explained. He really wished this could be just as simple as telling his parents that he didn't want to marry Mel but his father didn't care about love. So he had to approach it at the business side and that was becoming more and more problematic. "This whole thing is just really twisted and medieval. An arranged marriage honestly" Rich looked up from the phone as he watched her study the ring. "Well glad you like the ring at least. I wanted to get you something that you would like and I thought it fit" He did put a good amount of thought into the ring. He didn't hate the girl sitting in the car with him. Just couldn't see himself marrying her.

Agreed. The only way I got us out of spring break was that someone hadn't had the thought that me still being in high school could be bad for PR. Especially since they are already talking children and solidifying the marriage. That part made her shudder. She had expected to go to college right after high school, not become a mother. She'd heard the words honeymoon baby from the Gaunt matriarch enough that she was suspicious of everything. They had even tried to make her an appointment for a fertility specialist. Creepy, creepy people. im still not even sure where this came from. Our businesses are so different in nature. Have they said anything to you yet?

Rich shook his head. He didn't really understand it all either. And to top it off his father wouldn't explain any of it to him. Maybe because if Rich knew more he could find a way out of the whole marriage thing. "Nothing. They are doing their best to keep me out of the loop for the most part. I guess they don't want me digging too far into the whole thing" He explained. What would they really gain with merging the families? He was still trying to figure that out and it was driving him nuts. The children aspect gave him the chills. That was just something he did not want any time soon and knew Mel wasn't into the idea. "I would love to know what goes on in those women's heads for them to already be thinking about children" Rich said before checking his phone again. "The drive is going to just drop us off at the venue but we can go wherever from there, so its up to you" He added looking over to Mel.

Even if they didn't stop the wedding and still got married, she wanted time to figure things out. How was she supposed to spend her life with this guy she barely knew outside of the business world, much less raise a semi functioning family with him? Before she could dwell on it for long, the driver stopped the car and opened rich's door. "Well, let's get this over with at least."

Rich knew his mother could be overbearing. She meant well in most cases. "Yeah just don't let her fool you." He laughed slightly. Honestly he believed she was seemingly nice to others because she was able to take out her anger and frustration out on her second child. He did care for his parents and his sylbings but he didn't agree with their parenting method and knew the twins were just cruel. It never phased him, he just never wanted to raise a family the way they did. He also didn't want to have to worry about a family at such a young age. It just wasn't in his agenda for at least a few years. Everything was just happening so quickly.
Rich put a smile on when the driver opened the door. He offered his had to Mel, being the gentlemen. It wasn't hard acting the part, if anything it was something he was good at. Being charming was one of his perks. "You ready, M'lady" He said pleasantly.

Melanie nodded and accepted his hand. Her first impression of the venue was a good one, but it wasn't what she would want for a dream wedding. Supposedly the reasoning for having it in Wyoming instead of closer to home had something to do with Rich's schooling and the Gaunt family ties to the Academy itself. Her family could care less, though she knew deep down that her father had to be a little disappointed that she wasn't getting married at their home in Houston. Well, this place would certainly do. The only one I know that would be better is possibly my Aunt's home in Calloway. Tristan was a faint part of her life, but she was still present. Maybe that was an option if they could clean up the old estate in time.
A team of people rushed out to great them, but Melanie wasn't interested in being overwhelmed at this point. They had enough to worry about without too many eyes telling them what was best. Hello. Would you mind if my fiance and I just strolled around for a while to get a feel for the place? We'll come find you as soon as we're ready to see the inside. She requested sweetly, making sure to bat her eyelashes and move her hand just right so that her engagement ring flashed in the light. Though they seemed slightly apprehensive, they eventually left her alone with Rich again. There, now we get some more free time to talk as long as we remember to keep smiling. She stated, obviously proud of herself as she nudged him in he direction of an elaborate garden.
