COMPLEXION | Thirteen is not a good year for clear skin, although Jas does better than some of his school-mates. |
NATIONALITY | Japanese-American. |
APPEARANCE DESCRIPTION | Jas wears his clothes like a young kid; roughly, with little care of them. He's lived rich all of his life; if he needs something, he is not left wanting, thanks to his parents' deep pockets. The Nirav's aren't filthy rich, however, so there are limits - but Jas is a simple, eager boy, and he isn't quite as wasteful as some of his fellow rich kids' at Ashford seem to be. He's still not in the habit of doing laundry often, though. Jas tends to wear comfortable clothes, nothing terribly fancy. T-shirts, tank tops or plain undershirts. The occasional polo, if he feels like 'dressing up', and blue jeans or khaki pants. He does have his ears pierced twice; one, his mother approved, and those other set he snuck off and got in a fit of rebellion when his parents shipped him off to Ashford. |
BEYOND THE LOOKING GLASS
LIKES | Dogs, lizards, climbing trees, reading, cloudy days, fall, kites, laughing with friends, apples, showing off his power. |
DISLIKES | Salt-water, bland food, math class, snobs, tight clothes, feeling different, melting things on accident, when Mama calls a lot, when his body feels weird, over-doing his power. |
BEST SUBJECT | English. |
WORST SUBJECT | Math. |
STRENGTHS | Writing, being energetic, willing and able to constantly try new things, an openness to new people, and after some classes his parents had quickly signed him up for, Jas has the dubious talent of controlled, even breathing. |
WEAKNESSES | Getting too excited, easily dared into things, he has a dislike of swimming (worrying that his power won't work if he's soaking wet), a tendency for showing off for anyone, puppy-like hero worship of those who impress him. |
HOBBIES | ✓ He's trying to write a book in his spare time. It's terrible. ✓ Jas likes climbing the tallest tree he can find. He's eager to scout out Ashford Academy's trees. ✓ Seeing what he can light on fire. |
PET PEEVES | ✓ When he burns his hair. ✓ That way girls travel in packs. Why? |
PERSONALITY DESCRIPTION | Jasper's nervous about starting high-school, like most tweens-turned-teens. Ashford Academy, though, is a whole 'nother ball park compared to regular high-school! (And he's never been an egg-head; he studies easily for classes he's good in, but studying for his bad classes is like pulling teeth.) That makes him doubly nervous, and boy, is he an open book! Unfortunately for Jas, he tends to wear his heart on his sleeve - his heart, and all of his thoughts and feelings, too, be they good, bad, or better kept quiet. Yes, that's right; the flame-breather is a blabber mouth. He rattles on when he's bored, passes lengthy notes when in boring classes, and becomes a nervous brain-to-mouth wreck when scared, his thoughts bypassing that all-important inner filter most people have. Thinking about having to talk about his trans-ness makes the poor kid break out in a cold sweat; talking about it, however briefly, with anyone but his parents, sets off Jas's inner motor-mouth, amped up to 11. Even in a hidden school full of strange kids with stranger powers, he's convinced someone will think he's even weirder. At heart, Jasper is a caring kid, if reckless and a bit short-sighted. His parents hope he'll grow out of the last two traits; their son sending bi-weekly requests for new clothes thanks to 'unfortunate experiments' isn't something they want to deal with for four years. |
ALL THE SMALL THINGS
POWER | FIRE-BREATHING |
POWER DESCRIPTION | Jas's power is fire-breathing. In the mountain-surrounded area that Ashford Academy is situated, he's very, very glad to have a power that keeps him warm. Or rather, could keep him warm if he ever got the knack of not accidentally scorching things around him...and himself. The smell of burnt hair and burn cream is a common one in Jas's room. Although he doesn't like to swim in any case, Jasper has been avoiding the pool because he's unsure if his power would work if he got wet; he's also been avoiding baths (though, thankfully for his hygiene and everyone's noses, he still takes showers as regularly as any thirteen year old boy). He's still too attached to his newly-found power to want to risk even a momentary loss of it. He isn't able to keep his fire going for very long; even with the hastily-applied breathing techniques he was taught, his fire never lasts longer than a few seconds. If he pushes his limits too hard, or tries to breath intensely hot flames, Jasper ends up with a terrible sore throat. He is also not immune to his own flames; they burn his body just as easily as they burn anyone else, with the exception of his throat; though he gets sore throats, as described above, his mouth and throat never burn. If one wanted to beat Jas, all they would have to do is stay out of the way of his flames - five, maybe six inches from his mouth - and wait for the lad to tire himself out, if they couldn't just beat the small thirteen-year-old physically. (The lighter described in Special Items does nothing; it's a keep-sake, not a power addendum.) If his flames catch something on fire, he can control that spread flame - to a certain, limited, extent. If it spreads too much, he loses his 'grasp' on it; he can't control flames that aren't 'his' at all. |
SPECIAL ITEMS | Jas has a lighter that his grandfather gifted to him when the family found out about his powers; 'just in case you need help', he was told. Unlike most of what he owns, this lighter is worn, but well-cared-for, and has a motto freshly inscribed into the side in two small lines; 'a dragon's heart burns fiercely, even in the face of evil'. |
SOMEBODY THAT I USED TO KNOW
CHARACTER HISTORY | Jasper Palem Nirav was born Jasmine Palem Nirav, on a cold winter night. A bouncing baby girl, little Jasmine was healthy and happy, as were her parents, delighted to have a daughter. The years marched on, the Nirav's a happy, prosperous family - they lived well, in a good neighborhood, with good schools. There were some ups and downs - arguments, like any family has, none of them very serious. They were confused when Jasmine came to them, a few months after her eleventh birthday, and explained, as best as a child could, that she wanted - needed - to be a boy. She had even picked out her new name, she told her parents, grinning at them; her front tooth missing, then, ponytail bobbing behind her. It took some time, and a couple of talks with the most discreet child psychologist they could afford, but the Nirav's came to accept Jasper as who he was. A year after that, when Jasper had only just started worrying about his highly unusual new ability (and how to tell his parents), representatives from a mountain-nestled highschool none of the family had heard of came knocking on their door. Now, having been found by the watchful eyes of Ashford Academy before his powers became unruly, Jasper is happy to be going off on his own...mostly. The thought of leaving his parents and his home, for a highschool halfway across the country where he didn't know any of the other freshman? That would be enough to unnerve anyone! He hopes to find friends and acceptance at Ashford...and maybe, if he's lucky, he'll even learn how to do some cool tricks with his fire. |
THE HOUSE THAT BUILT ME
MOTHER | EMILEE JAMES-NIRAV - 34 - Home-Maker - "Maman is wonderful...but she worries too much! It was her idea to get me those breathing classes. She calls, like, every week, and talks forever. Ugh. But we love each other; she's been really open and accepting, about my powers and...and body stuff." |
FATHER | TAKANASHI QUENG NIRAV - 36 - Stocks-Trader, Businessman - "Papa is quieter than Mama. But he's loving, in his own way. Mama says he's always been a quiet man...I inherited my energy from her side of the family! Me and Papa, we talk mostly through letters, or e-mail. It's easier than trying to get him to speak! I know he does a good job at work; I wonder if he talks in charades in the boardroom?" |
SIBLINGS | NONE. |
OTHER | HOUSTON PIERRE JAMES - 92 - Retired Naval Officer - Paternal Grandfather - "Grandpapa is sooo old! He keeps a picture of Grandmama in his wallet - where he used to keep the lighter he gifted to me. He likes to act stodgy around extended family, but we all know he's a teddy-bear. He's never said anything to me about my powers, but he did give me his lighter before I left for school, so - that's good, right?" |
