Melanie has the ability to mentally communicate with people. She has a normal range of around ten feet unless she is familiar with the mind she is communicating with. If she has communicated with someone before multiple times, she can feel their mental presence for up to 100 yards, but the connection tends to be weak. Her range only slightly increases when she is panicked and is attempting to find a specific person.
Communicating with a stranger is harder for Melanie because she currently struggles with finding the connection and holding on to it. With training, she might be able to hold a conversation with up to four people at the same time, but they would not be able to hear eachother's thoughts, only hers.

when we collide sparks fly
The least interesting part of being a member of a family where you were expected to be a cog in the economic wheel was generally the conference calls. Because Melanie wasn't with her parents, she was only required to phone in for the ones on weekends and evenings. This one was no different. Stocks, exchanges, hiring and firing and everything else in between. There was even an hour long conversation about the politics of changing the colors of the women's bathroom in one of the offices. Why she had to be there for that instead of hanging out with Rae or basically anything else in the entire world was beyond her.
Right at the end of the call, a voice came on the line that she was more familiar with than most, but not necessarily one she was used to being in the day to day chats. The senior member of the Gaunt family was more chatty than usual as her mother piped up, suggesting wedding venues and asking when she was flying to france to look at wedding gown. Her expression of confusion was met with hearty laughs all the way around. And that was when she was finally told the truth. A merger. Not of two big companies, but of the families. Of course there was no way in their opinions that she could say no. This had been the plan her entire life. Either she met a suitable match before her father found one or he and grandfather would take care of it for her. It seemed that a few days away from her 18th birthday, the search was over.
Since it was her usual practice to walk around while she listened to the conversation in the background, she had made it all the way to Zellner Lawn when the news sunk in that her life was basically over. He sold me. He gave me to the highest bidder. She thought, hopefully just to herself. The cold air was seeping through her jacket and her teeth were chattering, but she didn't notice. She was too busy thinking about everything that had just happened and how her father had essentially signed her life over in a few words on a public phone call.

There are many different kinds of telumkinesis, apparently. Braxton's particular brand is the more powerful of them, allowing him to conjure anything to be used as a weapon. There are a few snags in this awesome power, the most annoying of which being the five foot rule. Anything he conjures can't leave a five foot radius from him.
Drops his sword? Poof, gone.
Bow and arrow? Only if you want to hit them with it.
Stapler? Sure why not, but don't expect those staplers to be useful once you leave the papers on the desk.
Another flaw int he power is that he must conjure the item with the intent of using it as a weapon. Whether it be to hit a dummy, or attack a person, Braxton's power won't work if he just wants to conjure a ruler for giggles. He has to have the intention of smack someone or something with it. The way he gets around this is very Hulk like. He just decided that if he is always angry, he will always want to beat something up and then conjuring stuff is no big deal.

Even though Braxton had lived with the Thorns for a good while, and despite their many efforts to spark his interest, he didn't care one lick about the family business. In order to care about it, you would actually need to make an effort for something completely boring. The one time, ages ago, when he actually sat in on a conference call, he hung up before it had gotten passed introductions and the Thorns had never bothered him with the stupid crap again. And it wasn't that today was completely different. He knew there was a call happening, because of an email he had received. But it wasn't until later that he learned what it must have been about. After all, they would have to ask the board before approving something so completely drastic. He didn't understand what was going on, but he had always assumed that the reason that they hadn't formally adopted Braxton and Octavia was because of some business deal or something. So when he got the call a few minutes before, on his way back to the dorms from the gym, he was surprised to learn that they were going to push for a formal adoption. The thing that disturbed him the most, though, was not that he was getting adopted. In fact, it seemed to be a long time coming. But the idea of being HER brother. He wasn't sure why, but something in the back of his head immediately recoiled from the idea. She was so....there wasn't even a word he could use without offending himself. So why did it bother him? Probably because that meant they would be forced to spend holidays together for the rest of forever. Yeah. He was sure that had to be it. Lost in thought, he came across Melanie on the Zellner Lawn. He frowned. Braxton could tell something was bothering, though he didn't know if it was because of something she looked like or if it was because she seemed to always be chipping at the wall in his head he had tried to put up to block her out, " I guess you heard the news then?" He said in a flat voice, stopping on the sidewalk near her.

Braxton's presence startled her, but not quite as much as she thought it would. After the whole marriage thing was announced she had muted the call to go find Rich, so maybe he had finally called in. Shouldn't he be more gloating or something? At least some vague amusement at the fact that his mortal enemy had been sold off right before she turned eighteen. Yea, I heard. Do you think mother will make you wear a tux or will you find a way to not go? She retorted as her phone started buzzing with emails about venues and dresses. They were serious. Her time was up. I'm sure a spring wedding would be lovely, don't you think? Her voice was dripping with sarcasm as she looked up at him from her place on the ground.

His confusion with the situation only got worse as she responded. He glared, as was his typical response to confusion, and shook his head, "Why would I wear a tux to some stupid adoption ceremony?" He asked like she was being completely stupid, "Wait...wedding? What?" Braxton looked at the ground, still frowning, "Safe to guess we got different new then."

Adoption? Why were they adopting Braxton now when he was about to age out? It didn't make any sense to her. They had held off for so long in hopes that he would come back around and...no, there was no way she was going with that train of thought now. Even she wasn't that stupid. I guess we did. Congrats on the adoption...Braxton. She was genuinely happy for him, even if it didn't settle well when she had paused to try and call him brother. Her mouth just couldn't form the word.
Standing up so that she could face him, she left the pen and legal pad on the ground. It didn't matter anymore. Soon enough Richard would have to deal with all of that for her and she could focus on being the perfect wife. The thought made her shudder. and yea...apparently I'm engaged now. Arraigned marriage with Richard Gaunt, the brother of Octavia's roommate. She wasn't sure if Brax would remember the name or not due to his selective memory, despite the fact that they had met Rich on multiple occasions. He was older and more in to the business thing than either of them were, so he was therefore more boring. Even when they were friends, she doubted that Braxton would've paid much attention to him. After spring break, I'll be Melanie Gaunt officially, unless something changes. From the sound of that phone call, there was a snowball's chance in hell of that. Her mother was already blowing up her phone with ideas and phone numbers to call.

It was starting to sink in. The adoption. The wedding. The Gaunts, a relatively familiar sounding name from his list of important shit he was supposed to remember from years ago. He remembered how things were the last time he saw the Thorn family. It was like some bad rom com where they were hoping that he and Melanie...Maybe they thought....adoption....His mind was moving in fourteen different directions at once, trying to peice together the logic. They didn't want to adopt the Wyatt's because they wanted them as children, they wanted the Wyatt's because...He frowned, " You're getting married?" After all that thought, why was it that the only thing that sunk in had nothing to do with him. In fact, he should be happy someone else got saddled with her, " No you're not." He said, like he didn't believe her.

when we collide sparks fly
Shaking her head, Melanie took out her phone and opened one of the messages from her mother containing an absurd number of images, mostly wedding dresses and a few for brides maids. This isn't a joke Braxton. They went away and decided that I hadn't found someone worthy fast enough. Then they sold me to the highest bidder "for the good of the family." A borderline bitter part of her wanted to add that now he and Octavia were going to be a part of that family who would benefit from shipping her off like a piece of furniture. This is so messed up. I don't even...Her hand flew up towards her face, rubbing her eyes and her temples like she was trying to wake herself up from a bad dream. Unfortunately, she was awake and this was very, very real.

The frown lines in his forehead were at risk of becoming permanent parts of his face as he shook his head, " What good is your hand in marriage to anyone?" He said, the same nagging feeling of uncertainty that he felt about the adoption crept up in his chest and confused him further. His reservations about Melanie's brother would have nothing to do with his feelings about her wedding, or the fact that someone else would be marrying her. He shook his head again, " No, you're not." He said again, in complete denial. Why was he so upset by this?

Her composure was breaking slowly but surely as she finally let her hand fall and looked at him again. Because whoever gets me gets the company. He's one of the heirs to the Gaunt fortune. The math isn't hard. It was a simple business merger for everyone else, but for her it felt like a death sentence. She had considered calling her mother and saying something, but she would just tell her to suffer through it and then find a lover like every other girl in her situation did. Preferably someone who could be discreet. It doesn't matter if you say it isn't happening a million times, it very much so is. and why do you even care... she wanted to ask, but that was too much effort at this point. She needed to figure this out ASAP.

Braxton was getting angrier and angrier the more he thought about it. She kept saying it was happening but that wasn't a thing. It couldn't be a thing. He ignored the pictures on her phone that she tried to show him and instead grabbed both of her shoulders in each of his hands. He made her face him and looked her dead in the face, " No. You're not." His voice sounded determined, though he actually didn't know what he HAD determined. Something about all this was making him feel sick. He released her shoulders and turned away from her, walking back to his dorm to brood.
