HISTORY

Melanie is the oldest grandchild of Samuel Thorn, an oil and steel tycoon from the south. Years of hard work and manual labor shaped Samuel in to a great man, but a hard one. This was a trait that he passed along to his son Ashton years later. When Samuel died, Ashton took over at the age of 18 as the head of the company. A few years later, Ashton chose to up his social standing by marrying socialite Larissa Matthews, a New Yorker with an attitude and a love for everything expensive. It didn't take long for Ashton and Larissa to bring their first child in to the world, a little girl named Melanie with her father's eyes and her mother's love for the grander life. Still, her father somehow managed to keep Melanie humble enough to prevent her from being an all out brat. Spoiled, yes, a monster...not so much. A little over a year later, Damien Alexander Thorn was born and Ashton considered his family complete. He didn't have time for the two children he already had, so why have more? Eventually his attitude shifted as Melanie and Damien grew older and developed their powers. Melanie came from a long line of SPB's on both sides, so it wasn't a shock for anyone when she suddenly started talking to people without even moving her mouth. As business settled in and no longer needed his attention, Ashton realized that he really did want a bigger family and so decided when Melanie was fourteen that he would attempt to have another child. Larissa wanted nothing to do with the whole process, so at the suggestion of his brother in law, he chose to become a foster parent. It gave him the children he wanted as well as good PR for his company. Melanie loved having the foster children around, especially because her parents went to great pains to make sure that everyone in the house had a power of some sort. In all, her father fostered four children for a short time. The first two were DANIELLE ANGELEA ROCKEFELLAR and FINLEY TATE ROCKEFELLAR, who eventually went to live with her uncle as his lifestyle was a better fit for the rockefellar twins. Before they left, the Wyatt siblings BRAXTON THOMAS WYATT and OCTAVIA BELLE WYATT joined their household and stayed for much longer. Octavia and Alex seemed to become instant best friends, even though Melanie held a fondness for the girl. Braxton seemed to be more of Melanie's person though and they forged a fairly strong bond over the two years they lived together. She never could say that she saw him like a brother and that was probably why her parents didn't move to adopt him sooner. So what if she had a crush on her best friend, it couldn't hurt anything, right? Everything took a turn for the worst one fateful day a year before Melanie enrolled at Ashford. Octavia had been acting strange and, in an attempt to find out what was wrong with the younger girl, Melanie followed her away from the house one evening to a place where she had been hanging out. There she discovered that Octavia was selling time with her to people, much like dealing drugs due to Octavia's power of ecstasy manipulation. Concerned, Melanie immediately returned home and sought out her father who ensured her it would be taken care of. She never knew exactly what happened in that room, but the next day Octavia and Alex were gone. Searches were made, awards posted, her father even commissioned a website dedicated to finding his son and foster daughter, but no one had seen them. It was like they had disappeared completely. In an effort to get Tavie to come to him, Braxton left the home to attend Ashford Academy, the SPB school they had all chosen to stay away from due to their private tutors. He hasn't spoken to her since then which has hurt Melanie more than she tends to let on. Recently, Larissa and Ashton made the decision to relocate to France for a year to broker a business deal despite their son's continued absence. Melanie, still heartbroken about Braxton's leaving and what she views as Tavie's betrayal, chose to stay behind. Unfortunately her parents refused to let her stay in the family home while they were gone, leading her to enroll at Ashford herself so that she could continue the search efforts, hopeless as they may be.

If she has communicated with someone before multiple times, she can feel their mental presence for up to 100 yards, but the connection tends to be weak. Her range only slightly increases when she is panicked and is attempting to find a specific person. Communicating with a stranger is harder for Melanie because she currently struggles with finding the connection and holding on to it. With training, she might be able to hold a conversation with up to four people at the same time, but they would not be able to hear eachother's thoughts, only hers.
