APPEARANCE | The best word to describe Lola physically is compact. While slight, her body is sturdy and muscular from years of dedicated athleticism, chiefly dance, swimming, and as of late some weight training. Lola fancies her body a good body- strong, flexible, and reliable, but she isn't without her complaints or petty teenage insecurities. She has never been the girl to be well-endowed with feminine assets and her figure could be described as pear-shaped, with wide hips and a shapely backside largely attributed to her lower body strength. Most would describe her proportions as petite with a short torso and long limbs / neck that lend themselves well to ballet. Despite her modest proportions Lola has the presence of a pitbull ready to strike. Lola doesn't smile, she doesn't laugh, and she has not graced this planet for your own individualistic entertainment. Her expression borders anywhere from bitchy resting face to somber. If you do manage to squeeze a smirk out of her, consider yourself lucky or very very unlucky. As for her personal style, Lola's clothing is absent of the girlish frills that usually accompany her gender and replaced for comfortable oversized tee-shirts, sweat shirts, and sweat pants, usually with some kind of leotard or other dance attire worn underneath. Very rarely will you catch her in anything remotely resembling a blouse or dress, and instead one can expect to find her closet stuffed with old flannels, band tees, jeans, and combat boots. For the past couple of summers Lola has left home to travel back to her home country and each time she returns she usually has some kind of additional form of body art. Current modifications include: Full sleeve(left), knuckles (right), and a medusa. In addition to that, amidst the spirit of teenage rebellion, she has dyed her hair several colors ranging from purple, bright red, and the current seafoam shade of green. Clearly this girl does not ever want a professional job. |

WEAKNESSES | - a vicious temper - her little brother - a big fat stubborn ego - focusing in class; her grades are abysmal - a really good book- specifically she has a huge weak spot for romantic literature. - she has absolutely no tact; offends people very easily |
HOBBIES | - Lola's number one passion is and will always be dance. This is the thing she pours the majority of her time and energy into. To be honest, her sheer dedication leaves very little time for other hobbies. - Likewise, she is extremely passionate about music and involved in the local music scenes. Primarily metal, but she is also a fan of classical music. - Reading, mostly as an escape and a distraction. She's a big fan of both contemporary and classical literature, prose, and poetry. It's not uncommon for her nose to be shoved in a book for days on end. |
PET PEEVES | - When people insist on small talk. This goes doubly if they are a stranger, especially when they expect her to engage the conversation out of politeness and social expectations. - Lola really doesn't like being told what to do by anything or anyone. Her headstrong streak especially rears its ugly head in the face of anyone in a position of power. This goes for teachers, law enforcement, parental figures, etc. Even if they are speaking levelly and logically to her, she just doesn't want to hear it. |
PERSONALITY | Lola Alvarez is not your friend. She's not the fun edgy alternative girl of your dreams, and she doesn't give a damn what you think about her. She doesn't care if you think she looks weird, fun, artsy, or off beat. Somber and serious Lola has built nigh impenetrable ice walls around her character- most likely stemming out of her deep seated fears of abandonment. She walks around with a perpetual grimace and over all is not a very inviting or fun person to be around. Don't try to make jokes, small talk, or for christsake tell her to fucking smile unless you want to abandon any sense of dignity you might have had. Lola will curse out a perfect stranger and pick them apart with very little qualms to how it makes them feel. This is mostly because she feels like shit, like, all the time, and she's pretty fricken' pissed off about it. She remembers having a good life at some point and being happy. She remembers wanting to smile and it didn't hurt the muscles in her cheeks. She remembers waking up and her body didn't ache with sadness. She also remembers learning that life isn't fair at all, even to children, and sometimes shitty things happen to people and it isn't anyone's fault (at which point she felt like punching fate in the face). Most importantly, Lola is a liar that tries to feign indifference or even anger in the face of her own adversity. She hates more than anything else to appear feeble and powerless, so all her self doubt and vulnerabilities are taken in, chewed up, and spat back out as a spiteful little ball of animosity. Deep down she is flawed and frightened, as many are, though her means of processing those feelings are efficiently unhealthy and often times destructive. But beneath all the bullshit there is a girl that cares deeply, loves intensely, and never partially. Her emotions guide her actions and logic often times seems to take a back seat to her diametric fervor. Her loyalty is unrivaled to those she cares about, though the thick adamantine exoskeleton of antipathy does not crack willfully. |
THE HOUSE THAT BUILT ME
MOTHER | Belem Alvarez - 37 - Activist - Lola hardly knows her, and only can recall her through stories her father used to tell. |
FATHER | Adrian Alvarez - Deceased - Unskilled Labor - The hardest working, most loving and family-oriented man she has ever known. Lola has immense respect for her father though at times she does spite him for leaving herself and her brother to fend for themselves in a world that Lola was not quite ready to face. |
SIBLINGS | Joaquin Alvarez - 7 - Child - Half Brother - Lola's life blood. She cares for her brother like he were her own child and raised him in conjunction with her uncle Edwin for quite a long while. Lola corresponds with him regularly. |
OTHER | Pamela - deceased - Cashier - Step Mother - Lola was very fond of Pamela and while she wasn't her Mother, she was the closest thing Lola ever had to a strong female bond. She misses her dearly and her death was truly tragic. Edwin - 25 - Line Cook - Uncle - Comes second only to Joaquin. Edwin helped raise Lola and her brother from the time he was twenty and was entirely unprepared to take on the responsibility. Edwin and Lola butt heads often because they are very similar in personalities, though deep down she does love him. |
SOMEBODY THAT I USED TO KNOW
HISTORY | Lola was born in Puerto Rico to a young woman named Belem whom she hardly remembers and her father Adrian. From what he had told her Belem was a beautiful woman but difficult to tame, reckless in nature, and constantly brought around trouble for her Father. While Lola inherited her Mother's temper and animosity towards law enforcement, she seems to have rooted herself in reality with the grounded perspective and work ethic of her Father. Lola loved her Father. Mothers and Fathers are both important in a young childs life, but when one of them is unstable the child clings to whatever stability, whatever sense of routine and comfort, that exists in their life. For Lola that was Adrian. He was a hardworking man that tried his best to provide for his daughter. Lola's Mother disappeared around the age of three, but it wasn't uncommon at that point for the woman to slip in and out of her life. At some point she accepted that she wasn't coming back, and perhaps Lola was too young to care too much. Adrian eventually met another woman whom Lola would also call her Mother. Her name was Pamela and Lola liked her because she smelled nice (like roses), would dance la bomba with her in the kitchen when it came onto the radio and cooked the best sofritos. Lola remembers the time when her Father was with Pamela to be amongst the happiest days of her life. When she was ten her Father sat Lola down and explained to her she was going to have a little brother and that Pamela would be his Mother. Over the next few months her belly swelled to the size of a watermelon and excitement permeated the Alvarez home. The idea of being a big sister was a welcome responsibility to Lola and she took it on with pride. However, there were complications during Pamela's child birth, and while her brother (Joaquin) survived, Pamela did not. Shortly after her death her Father also took his life, leaving Lola and Joaquin alone. Briefly before his death Lola can recall her powers beginning the very first strides in their manifestation and hadn't wanted to let him go and tried to reason with him desperately- though at the time it had been a vague, filmy reflex of anxiety that had quickly matured into a full blown panic. Often times she reflects on this time, having been the one to discover his body hanging from the rafters of the horse farm he worked at- and wonders if there could have been anything to change her circumstance. Being that the first demonstration of her powers had been an overall unpleasant experience she did what many children do- she simply forgot, and pushed the event out of her mind. Lola and her brother moved to to live with her Father's younger brother, their Godfather, Edwin. While Edwin was compassionate and hardworking much like Adrian, he didn't know shit about raising kids and was likely too young (twenty) to carry the burden. Much of Lola's teenage years were trial and error. Money was tight due to the extra burden of children and Edwin struggled to make ends meet on line cook wages. At thirteen Lola left Edwin to try and ease his financial burden to attend school at Ashford, no longer in denial about powers that had grown from pangs of anxiety into full blown clairvoyance. When Lola first started school in Ashford she knew little English and was bullied often as a result, and learned many of her future academic behaviors from this time in her life. Her first year was the hardest, but gradually she seemed to find her niche. A young Lola was sociable and comparable to the typical 'mean girl'. She bullied other children, was a cheerleader, and ruled the play ground with an iron fist, however those that were within her good graces were rewarded with utmost praise. To those she didn't like, she was mean and openly teased other children. Despite this her popularity came naturally. Children are cruel, and Lola was no exception. However sometime between her freshman and sophomore years there was a shift in her character, appearance, and attitude. She quit cheerleading. She went from mean to meaner, even towards those that pursued her beck and call. Lola shut everyone out, sans maybe Joaquin. She found solace and drive within her anger. It was an emotion she knew well, where as others felt foreign, strange, and frightening, so she let it consume her. |
ALL THE SMALL THINGS
POWER | death sensing |
POWER DESCRIPTION | Lola’s powers were slow to develop and never really came into their fullest fruition until she turned 13, though there had always been subtle clues, especially ages 10-13 that included pangs of anxiety, unexplained panic attacks and feelings of utter hysteria. Lola hasn’t coped well with the idea of both death and the gift of her powers. In fact, for quite a long time, Lola was in complete denial of their existence. That is to say, she finds her power very unpleasant and has not yet embraced it to its fullest potential. Since then they have developed from natural panic attacks to supernatural sight and clairvoyance. Despite her sight, she finds it especially difficult that she hasn’t the ability to interrupt the timelines of death. For example, if she were to stop the death of an individual, fate would find another means to fulfill its design. |
SPECIAL ITEMS | Cell phone to keep in contact with her family who currently reside in Montana. |
