It was a typical Sunday as Raven prepped the pets for the week. She had a few chores to do around the apartment but since she hadn't really been there the day before she didn't have much to do. She had gone on the double date and it was fun. She was glad she went. Raven decided to whip up some brunch since it was almost noon. She decided to make a simple bagel with cream cheese, tomato and smoked salmon. It was such an easy thing to put together and it also meant she didn't have to clean the kitchen much after. She took her plate and some tea to the living room so she could enjoy a good book and some company from her pets. She took a seat on the white lounge since the cats had taken over the black couch. The large windows along the high wall of her living room gave off ample natural light, making the room warm and pleasant. It didn't take long for her to dive into her large second edition of Le Morte d'Arthur. She loved collection first and second edition books. She didn't have too many because of the prices of such rare books but she had a nice collection of some of the classics.
She wasn't expecting any company, she never expected company, so when she heard a knock at the door she was shocked. She looked over to the snake curled up on her lap who immediately became alert at the sound of the door. "Well that's odd. I guess we should go see who it is" Raven stated to Onyx. She placed the book down on the table and stood up with Onyx around her shoulders. She walked over to the door, not prepared for the shock that would occur when she would open it.
Rich was still trying to figure out where his sister lived. He found out she didn't spend the weekends at the dorms and since she never went home he figured she had some apartment in town. It was just trying to figure out which one. Which meant either some digging into the records online or asking around. He figured he would ask around, less illegal and talking to people was his thing. It was almost noon when he finally was about to get the apartment complex where she lived, it was just a matter of the room. He placed a box in the storage of his motorcycle and took off to Calloway North. He wasn't going to show up to talk with his sister empty handed. He had a gift, a sample box of imported teas and a first edition copy of her favorite book. He might not know his sister very well but he figured some things would never change.
It wasn't too hard to get the room number. All he had to tell the people at the office was that he had a package to deliver to Ravenna Gaunt and flash is ever charming half smile and they gave her room number. He walked up to the apartment and hesitated at the door. He wondered if he should just leave the package. No that wasn't like him. He would never turn away. He hadn't seen his sister in over three years and from what her friend said he figured she didn't want anything to do with the family. Granted he didn't really know the extent of everything but at least he was there making an effort. She would see that right. He knocked on the door to apartment 413.
When she opened the door Raven found herself looking up at an older version of her brother. It had been over three years but she knew it was him. The same eyes, chiseled jaw and perfect looks fit for a Gaunt. There was a pause of silence as the two looked at each other. Raven snapped out of the shock and went to slam the door and walk off. Which would have worked if he hadn't put his foot in the doorway to stop her. She glared at him, Onyx hissed.
"Sil, just give me a chance. Please"
Raven sighed. If she wasn't so kind she would have just forced the door closed and been done with it but she still had a heart. "You have Five minutes starting now" She stated looking at her phone to set a timer. That was all he was going to get. She didn't have room in her life to go back to the way things were before Ashford. She didn't think she could go back to that life and she didn't want to. If he was going to cause problems she was just going to cut him out of her life for good. She had a family here.
"May I come in. I bring gifts. Call it a belated birthday present, I wanted to give it to you in person"
Raven rolled her eyes but reluctantly agreed to let her brother in. Her first house guest and it was someone she wasn't sure she even liked. She walked back to the living room where the cats were hiding behind the couch eyeing the stranger. They didn't care too much for new people and they could sense Raven's rising annoyance and slight anger. "Don't get comfortable, your time is dwindling. And we don't like unwelcome guest" She stated motioning to the Snake around her shoulders. She sat back down on the white lounge and sipped her tea, her back turned to her brother. She noticed him place the package on the table.
"Nice place Sil"
He was stalling. "Three and a half minutes" She stated coldly as she checked her phone, watching the seconds speed by. Not much longer and she would be free of this.
Rich winced at the time he had left. She wasn't kidding. Not that he thought she would. He had to get right to the point or this moment would be lost. He had no intention of giving up. "I am going to school here now. And that gives me the perfect timing to be here for you. We are family Sil, I am your big brother and I want to make up for lost time. I am here now so give me a chance" His voice was charming and sincere. That was all he needed was a chance, a chance to make it right. At last that is what he first believed. However now that he was looking at his sister he wasn't too sure. She had grown up into quite a beautiful young woman and seemed liked she was doing well here, without the family. No she had a family it just didn't include him.
"I have a family here. Friends that I care about and who care for me. If you wanted to be there then where were you three years ago, five. You were just like them, not a cruel but you still didn't do anything. You didn't protect me, or stand up for me. So what if you thought differently, or want to change things now. That's not how it works"
He could hear the anger in her voice. This wasn't the same sister he knew. The Raven he knew wouldn't have stood up for herself, wouldn't be so vocal. This was a different person. In many ways it was a good thing. He just needed to get to know the real Raven and stop picturing her as the broken girl he knew. "I am not going to leave like before. I am going to keep trying to make amends. We are blood, little sister. And I don't give up" Rich knew there was nothing else he could do right then. His time was up as he heard the phone alarm go off. "I'll be around Sil" He eyed the snake who looked like he was about to strike. He said as he walked to the door. He walked out of the apartment. And almost immediately heard the lock click. He stood there alone for a moment. He reached into his jacket inner pocket. In his hands was a letter that he wrote a while back and never could send it in the mail. He slipped it in the notch of the door for Raven to find. With a half smile he headed back to the parking lot to take a drive around town. That could have gone better but also it could have been worse. At least it was something.
Raven waited for a while before she opened her door to make sure he still wasn't there. The whole thing was very unreal. How dare he just show up out of nowhere and expect to be apart of her life. Granted she didn't resent him as much as the rest of the family but he still wasn't there when she needed someone. She was happy now and wanted to keep things that way. She noticed the envelope fall to the floor. She gingerly picked it up and examined it. On the front was just one word, Sil. She sighed and placed it with the box he brought. and placed it one one of she shelves in the living room. She couldn't bring herself to open it or even to toss it. Raven went ahead and made herself some more tea and sat back down with her book and pets. But as hard as she tried she just couldn't keep her mind on the words. She sighed and stared out the window. The two cats curled up next to her and Onyx curled up on her lap. "What do I do now guys" She asked with no real answer back, her eyes swelling with tears that slowly fell down her face as she was once again reminded of why she hated her family.
