There was something about climbing that Fin found to be relaxing or maybe it was that fact that his brain was working hard to figure out which branch was safe to put his feet on and which ones would mean he was going to fall. Finley wasn't sure why but climbing had always been a great pastime even before Dani was taken, their foster parents had a large tree in their garden with many branches that could handle his weight. That usually where he was found, that was something that hadn't changed Fin mused as he pulled himself onto a slightly higher branch. He was about ten foot off the ground now and wasn't planning on stopping yet. He had his backpack on his back which added extra weight but it didn't deter him. Finley knew that his meeting with Dani could have gone far better. He later realized that she wasn't used to him clamming up, they were thick as thieves and could tell each other everything. At least that's how it was before, but since then a lot has changed and Fin had changed. Fin stood up again looking up to the next branch up, he was going to have to jump to it. Taking his hands off the tree for a few seconds Finley jumped to grab hold of the branch above, wrapping his legs around it before pulling himself up onto it properly. The next few branches didn't need any jumping on his part as he climbed further up the tree like you would a ladder. Once he was high enough and he was pretty high he pulled his back pack off his back and unzipped it. Taking out his phone, headphones and a bottle of Jack Daniels he'd managed to swipe from somewhere, he sat down on the fairly thick branch with his back against the trunk. He put one headphone in his ear and shuffled his music before taking a swing of the whiskey. This was the best company he could ever ask for, he'd planned on leaving Ashford and Wyoming all together the next day but for now he'd just enjoy the peace of being up so high and so far away from people. Dani had spent most of her night crying down by the lake. She would never admit that to anyone, especially Gem or Fin at this point. Dani was supposed to be the strong one, level headed but reckless. Who was going to do that for her though now that everything has gone crazy? No one, apparently. Leaving another message on Gem's phone, Dani left her hiding spot just in time to catch Fin climbing up a tree.
Part of her just wanted to ignore him and head back to the dorms to get some sleep before class tomorrow, but she wasn't kidding anyone by saying she was going anyways. Maybe she should just drop out and go work at the shops in town or skip Wyoming all together. She could start over again completely. No best friend, no brother, no problems.
Something stopped her though. Maybe it was that stupid twin sense Fin was always going on about or maybe she just didn't want to be alone anymore, but either way there she was. Climbing up the tree, she didn't say a word. She just simply pulled herself up the limbs until she was resting a few limbs below fin, staring up at him with bright red, pleading eyes. |

I'm a land mine." Finley had been staring out over the lake and drinking the bottle of whiskey he'd brought up the tree with him. He was contemplating his next move, he'd found what he'd been looking for namely Dani and it seemed that the ridge between them wasn't repairable. He took another swig of the whisky and readjusted his position slightly so that he wasn't about to fall out of it. That wasn't a very good move. He considered staying at Ashford and maybe just avoiding Dani but that was never going to work, so it seemed his only option was to leave all together and never return. No regrets, that was his moto. A new place to visit is just what he needed, maybe he'd find a job, save some money and go out to Africa that's one place he'd always liked to go and Ashford couldn't find him there right. Finley heard movement from below him and what he saw broke his heart but he didn't let on. "Oh its you." he said looking down he saw Dani a few branches below him, while she was dressed just as she always would've been. Her eyes however were red and Finley knew her well enough to know she had been crying, she looked liked a kicked puppy and Finley hated that. He let his legs fall on either side of the limb he was sitting on and reached down offering his hand to his twin and helping her up to the same branch as him. "What do you want?" he asked. Dani almost didn't take the offered hand. Almost. She had already climbed all the way up here though, so why not? It wasn't like she had anything else to lose. Maybe if she just jumped and got it over with, things would be better. It wasn't that she was to that point necessarily, but things were getting worse by the minute instead of better. Something had to give.
Once she was settled on the branch, she pulled her knees up to her chest the best that she could. She was smaller than Fin though, so it was easier to balance herself without being afraid to fall. "My twin senses were tingling, so I came up. I wasn't going to, but...you know how that goes." Yes, she would've just let him go. Run of in to the night like every body else had. Like their father, like his mysterious family, like every foster parent or group home they had ever lived in. Nothing stayed, ever. So what was the point? |

I'm a land mine." Finley was glad she accepted his even if she did necessarily want to. It meant a lot that she still needed him because it didn't seem like it earlier. Now though his twin looked like she really could do with someone in her corner and Fin was going to make sure it was him and maybe Jack Daniels. "Best friend still MIA?" Fin asked offering her the bottle of whiskey. He supposed that her being here was testament to the best friend still not being back. Finley wasn't sure what to say when Dani settled herself in the tree. He just did a quick look over to make sure she wasn't going to fall. He couldn't let that happen to her. Finley laughed, it sounded strange to hear Dani say twin sense. "You don't ignore the twin sense. Like ever." Fin said. He knew that even the thought of running was stupid because then he'd be like everyone else in their messed up family, it didn't make him better than anyone else they knew. "Running away, its a genetic thing." Finley said more to himself than Dani really. He looked back out over the lake rather than at Dani, he'd really messed this whole thing up and he didn't know how to fix it. He figured Dani didn't need him or want him there either so what was the point of fixing it. Dani took the bottle without answering and downed more of it than she should have. Even for an experienced drinker, she knew that would be a bad move later. Too much alcohol, not enough food. When was the last time she had eaten a full meal? A while, at least. "Yea, Gem is still gone. No one's heard from him in a few days. He might have skipped town. His car is gone and so is his ex girl." If he would just answer the phone she could stop wondering what had happened, but since when was anything that easy?
His little diatribe about running didn't go unnoticed in the least bit, but she wasn't sure what to say about it. "I guess we get it from our father. Aria runs from her new family, you run from home, and I run from anybody who might care about me. Well, other than you and Gem and we all see how well that is working out for me." Her voice was bitter and hard edged, a lot like the whiskey she was still drinking. Once she had had enough, she passed the bottle back to Fin. |

I'm a land mine." Finely didn't comment on how much Dani had drank in one go, he knew she could control her own drinking. He himself hadn't eaten for some time either but it didn't cross his mind. "Sounds like fun." Finley said about Gem. An ex-girlfriend and skipping town sounded like a blast in his mind. More getting out of town than anything else, a girl was always a welcome addition though. Fin had still not turned to look at Dani, he wasn't sure he could face her. He listened to what she said about running away, about getting it away from their Dad. "Maybe people need to stop making it so easy." Fin said taking the bottle back, it was an observation he'd made. People made it to easy for them to run away, if they truly cared wouldn't they try and stop you running or run with you? His foster parents knew he was running and they just let him go. Dani scoffed, turning away to face the water instead of her twin. The last thing she wanted right now was to look him in the face, not when she was so close to breaking down again. "I don't know how much harder I can make it without handcuffs or a chain Fin. I'm not going to force people to stay in my life anymore. I can't. I love you. I love Gem. I might even love Ralph. But this..." Her hands were moving slightly, gesturing from side to side in a sweeping motion even though she wasn't looking at her brother. This whole situation was pointless, useless, and more than a little depressing.
"I want things to be the same, Fin, I really do. I want the only family I've ever had back, but things just keep changing and I'm not sure how much more I can take." Almost without thinking about it, she stood on the branch to look down.They were farther up than she had realized and the alcohol in her system had numbed her senses slightly. Maybe it wasn't so far down after all.

I'm a land mine." When Dani had looked away Fin looked back at his twin, it still surprised him how much she'd grown in the two years they'd been apart. Finley nodded at her words, this wasn't how their relationship was before and it's definitely not how he wanted it to be. He didn't exactly know what to say, he simply drained the bottle of Alcohol shoving the empty bottle back in his bag. "I don't want it to be like this Dani." Finley said. He was now looking at his twin again. He couldn't find the words to explain everything that needed explaining right there. "Things are always going to keep changing Dani, you might have to learn to deal with it." Finley said, his words weren't meant to be harsh or nasty but simply fact. He'd fast learned that life never stayed the same and even the people that you thought never would do. Finley panicked a little when Dani stood up, alcohol and heights didn't mix well and they were higher up than Dani probably realized. "Careful there sis. Still standing, Dani turned and faced her brother. "You want to talk about change Fin? Change is walking home from school and then never going back. Saying good bye to your brother and then fishing out that he's had his mind twisted so that he thinks you are the worst person in the world. The people who were about to adopt you turning you in to the police so that leaving wasn't a choice." For a minute she had been holding on to another branch, but now she let go of it. Her balance was just fine and this wasn't a new thing for her. Same tight rope, different audience.
"I don't know how to make things better when we just keep arguing all the time. We're supposed to be twins, but...maybe I should just back off and let you do your thing. You need to train more than you need me. " Her little brother was all grown up now. He didn't need her or anybody else. Especially not her. She was a poison to the people around her, always had been. "I love you fin and I miss you more than anything. I always will, until we can be twins again.

I'm a land mine." Finley wasn't just didn't know how to respond to his sister. "I've never thought you were the worst person in the world Dani." Finley said standing up now as well. "Everyone tried so hard to make me believe that you are and I wouldn't have it." He really didn't want his twin to think that's what he thought of her because it wasn't. He loved his twin and would still move heaven and earth for her. His teachers, classmates, neighbors and foster parents all tried to make him believe that she truly was a criminal but Finley always knew that it wasn't true even if his own memories said otherwise. "I'm probably more criminal than you are." "I don't need to train,definitely not more than I need you." Fin said shaking his head, which he realised was a a bad idea since he had been drinking. He needed his twin if he was going to figure this thing out. Training would only help with his power but this mental block he was going to need Dani's help because that thing had to go. "Dani we are twins! Always will be!" Finley said taking a small step towards her, he was really worried his twin would fall but was wasn't going to say that out loud. He didn't want Dani to leave him to do his own thing, he needed Dani now more than ever. "Dani, I need you and you know I never needed anybody but I do. I need you." Finley said. Tears started stinging her eyes again as Finley spoke. She needed her brother more than anything, but was he just saying this stuff because he was afraid she was about to jump? The answer was probably yes and she hated that. The past few days had turned her in to a complete, unpredictable nut job. Maybe she had already been one. "I can't...I don't.." Her words just wouldn't come out right as she took a few steps towards her twin and then decided too late to stop. Her foot slipped but she was still sober enough to make it look like she did it on purpose. The branch below them quickly caught her fall, so no harm, no foul. That didn't mean she was heading anywhere else anytime soon though. She and the ground did not need to become closer friends.
