PERSONALITY | Joaquin aspired to be like a superhero all his entire life. Before he even knew he could fly, he knew he wanted to help people whenever he could. Not for the fame, or the attention. But rather so that one day, he could inspire others to assist him on his mission to make the world a truly fantastic place to live. Joaquin will always put others before himself. If there was a bully in the cafeteria that was in the process of taking someone's milk, Joaquin was there. If the kids were outside at recess picking teams for a game, Joaquin would first pick the kid who was normally picked dead last. It was the little things he did he believed, that defined him as a good person in his own right. Putting others before yourself though does not come without penalty. It was clear very soon that kids would be able to take advantage of him. Taking his money, because they 'forgot their lunch money' or keep his video games because 'they couldn't afford them'. It was a sad scenario in some cases, but Joaquin had only done it to himself. He never really developed a resistance to this, and still suffers from his naivete to this day. When Joaquin has a goal, he will achieve that goal, on his terms. He has a will like no other, and if he desires something, it's for a good reason. The only problem here is that he doesn't really think his entire goal-oriented process through. For instance very rarely does he think about the consequences of his actions after he achieves said goal. It's not that he can't, he just usually acts so quickly, and sometimes even foolishly that he can't stop to think of the outcome. He just knows he wants what he believes will benefit the most people. All in all, Joaquin is a genuinely good person, and a decently intelligent kid. He just falls into the trap where people take advantage of him because of his youth and naivete. But no matter how many people use him, as long as he can continue to help others, he will never stop doing so. |

SOMEBODY THAT I USED TO KNOW
HISTORY | 16 years ago, on June 22nd, it was stormy. Very stormy. But it the delivery room, the sounds of thunder were cast aside by the screams of Sophia Marshall, giving birth to her first born child Joaquin. And at 9:52 P.M., the deed was done. And the future SPB was brought into the world. So started the life of the interesting young fellow known as Joaquin Marshall. Joaquin's father wasn't around like he could've been. Or rather like he should've been. Joaquin's mother worked more often, and harder than he did, and she was still more present than her husband Dean. She was swamped with the question 'Where's papa'?' More often than she would've liked. The worst part was, half of the time, she didn't even know herself. He essentially grew up without a father figure. His sister was often the only company that was available to him for a time. Ansel started school, and reading comic books at 5. It was beneficial that his first personality development coincided with him beginning school. He began assisting other immediately, quelling fights on the playground, and offering his own lunch to those that had forgotten theirs. Up to this point, not much was incredibly different from the life of Joaquin as compared to any other boy his age Jumping ahead a few years, Joaquin was 9 when he first started to play the game of basketball. He loved the sport. He adored the fact that it was incredibly easy to learn, and incredibly difficult to master. He played on his school team, and quickly arose to become the star of the team. His offensive skill was unprecedented. Though he received extra attention because of this, he never let it get to his head. He still desired to assist others whenever he could. His sister supported him through every trial and tribulation that arose with his new found popularity. The next few years seemed normal enough. Of course until things began to get..odd for the young boy. At 13, Joaquin was only 5'5, and he had a thin frame to boot. One day, as his coach was approaching the gym to get basketball practice started, he heard shouting and cheers coming from the gym. It wasn't that odd, after all young boys tend to be loud and obnoxious when playing sports. However what he saw was much more puzzling. Joaquin had dunked a basketball. Joaquin wasn't sure how he did it. He just jumped, and went up there! He was able to do it again, and again. He had just assumed he had an incredible jumping ability. He would come to learn that it was so much more fantastic that it had actually seemed. Sooner than he had expected. Joaquin was 14 when it happened. He was simply sitting at home watching television. Juliana was going out to some kids birthday party, and to be honest, Joaquin had not entirely been paying attention to the situation. All he knew, is that she had come home crying, sobbing uncontrollably. Immediately he became angry. Within minutes he had the full story. A boy, at the party, had gotten 'handsy' with Juliana. And according to Juliana, 'handsy' was being generous in coining a term. Joaquin was swollen with rage. He had rarely experienced anger. But this was more than that. It was a rage. A terrible, horrible, ferocity, that would have to be resolved. She begged him not to go anywhere, and that she would take care of it. But he was beyond reason. It was indeed uncharacteristic for him to be this mad, but he couldn't help himself. He told her to go to bed, and that he'd take care of it. He stepped outside, and took a deep breath. He wasn't sure what it was, but he knew at that moment, he had to right this situation. He shook his hands, and loosened his body. He knew where the boys house was. Within 15 minutes, he was there, banging on the front door. Lo and behold, who was to answer, but the violator himself. Without a second though, Joaquin threw a heavy punch, connecting with the older boy's chin. He slumped over, the punch had come unexpected, and he was anything but prepared but it. Unfortunately, some of his goons had been standing near the door, and they saw the situation. Without a second thought, Joaquin took off. They pursued. they chased his down the street for what seemed like years. It was only when Joaquin turned towards the backyards of houses that they were eluded. For Joaquin ran at a rather tall fence and without thought, bound off the ground. Only this particular time he didn't come back down. He sat there in the air, baffled. His arms swinging, stomach churning. It was an odd feeling, but an incredible sensation at the same time his head craned around, only to find the 3 boys standing in awe. They stared at each other for about a minute before they ran. Little did they know, Joaquin was just as surprised as they were. He angled himself downwards and focused. After 10 seconds or so, he was able to ground himself. He could hardly help himself from grinning. He flew. He could fly. He squatted, and exploded upwards again. He got up about 10-15 ft, and again, sat in mid air. He angled his body slightly, and went into a focused state. He was able to fly. Joaquin could not believe his senses. Unfortunately, his euphoria was cut short. The next day, the authorities showed up at Joaquin's doorstep. Apparently, you can't just punch someone's lights out and run away. Who knew? Fortunately for Joaquin, they weren't buying the flying story. So he only had to deal with one problem at the time. He fully cooperated with authorities, and got a minor charge. The following day, he got a letter from Ashford. He didn't desire to go. He did not want to leave his sister. But he figured if he did need the help from this institution, he had better take them up on the offer. Thus, his life at Ashford was to begin the following year. |
ALL THE SMALL THINGS
POWER | FLIGHT |
POWER DESCRIPTION | Joaquin's flight is based off his own propulsion. It is has nothing to do with manipulating his environment, and making himself lighter than air, or something of that sort. He is able to propel himself off of the ground. Flight comes with a few variations in and of the ability itself. For instance, he is able to jump great distances, but he must catch himself at the right moment, or risk hitting the ground at an incredible velocity. Likewise with flying. If he were to fall out of the sky, he would hit the ground hard enough to die. He is constantly monitoring his energy, speed, and other such variables when flying, and usually has to put 75% of his mental focus on flying. Joaquin's energy requirement for flight depends on what kind of flight he is actually performing. If he is floating just above the ground, it doesn't take much. But if he has to get somewhere in a hurry, it's going to take much more energy than that of your morning jog. When flying with the wind, it requires less energy, and requires more energy when flying against the wind. He cannot fly at altitudes where oxygen begins to get very thin. If Joaquin is driven with purpose, he can push himself further than he normally could. For instance, if someone is in genuine danger, he will have a deeper energy reserve, than if he is just aimlessly flying. |
SPECIAL ITEMS | He only brought with him a small photo of his sister, and clothes. |
