SOMEBODY THAT I USED TO KNOW
HISTORY | Raymond Jack Kotney was already a father and a husband and yet his eye strayed and found Elizabeth Maude Bennett, a woman who was ten years younger than his wife. She was a nurse at the Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital in Thermopolis, Wyoming. At first it started with him coming out to see her every month off and on since he didn't live in the town. To Elizabeth he was Jack, a kind and caring of not busy man. Soon his trips brought him to the city more often and she fell hard for the man. Within a few months Elizabeth was expecting and told Jack, he seemed apprehensive and unsure of things. She simply thought it meant he was unsure of how he would be as a father. They welcomed a son, Riley David Bennett, named after his grandfathers on his mother's side of the family and as they were not married Jack suggested Riley keep her last name. Shortly after Riley's birth Jack left and would return several weeks later. Elizabeth started to pull her heart away from the man but wanted him to be there for their son whom she loved. The first 5 years were rather uneventful, Riley would be in the hospitals daycare while his mother worked, and he loved spending time with her. He doesn't really remember much of his father at this time, just flashes of him really. Shortly after his fifth birthday Riley began to experience some strange accidents, Elizabeth is home with him and gets startled. She is worried at first that there is something wrong with her son, but once she sees he isn't hurt she stops worrying. A couple months later there is another accident but this time Jack is the victim of the jolt, Elizabeth noticed the colour drain from his face, Riley started to cry and it was the first time Jack raised his voice to the boy. He was told to shut up. Jack left that night and Elizabeth could have swore she was never going to see him again after that. Jack began to spend more weekends with Elizabeth and Riley and it made Riley feel like he was the luckiest boy in the world. He learned how to throw a ball and tackle someone. He really started to enjoy football even ice hockey became an interesting sport for him. Riley would always tell his mother how happy he was, yet Elizabeth was noticing how distant Jack was becoming especially when Riley had an accidents regarding his gift. When Riley was six years old he hard a conversation his father had on the phone and he was angry and he thought he had done something wrong. Elizabeth had heard the call as well but knew it wasn't about Riley, Jack was talking to another woman about missing a game, shortly after she looked into getting a Private Investigator to follow Jack. Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months and before Riley knew it his fathers secrets were spilling out. His father had another family, with a son, Riley saw the hurt in his mothers eye as she kicked his father out of the house. Riley watched as Jack never fought it, he never tried to stay, to be with his son. Over the next year Riley spent more time with his brother Nathan as his mother prepares to move to Calloway. Riley doesn't understand why they have to move closer to the family that was obviously better than what he was for his father. As Riley starts to get to know NATHAN TROY KOTNEY their father starts to try and bribe the pair, to win one over to his side. Jack stops trying with Nathan sooner once his older son rebukes his attempts. Riley however is torn, Nathan is being so kind to him while his father left without a fight, he is afraid Nathan is only being nice for now and soon he too will leave so there is no point in getting to know him. The year passes and Riley still acts out and is a constant terror, pushing Nathan and Elizabeth closer as they try and work out how to help the young man. On the day before his 8th birthday Jack shows up and takes Riley out for the day. It is the final time Jack tries and fails to bribe Riley and as such on the way home Jack spends the drive telling Riley that he was a mistake, that he was never wanted and that everyone's life would be better without him. Elizabeth notices that her son is rather quiet after the day with his father and sends a message to Nathan saying she thinks it would be a good idea if he too Riley to do something after their birthdays have passed. The next day however Riley gets into a fight at school and when she picks him up he is yelling and telling her that school doesn't matter and just not acting like himself at all. Once they get home she calls Nathan in tears, apologizing for calling him knowing he is only 16 but she doesn't know what to do since Riley is really not himself and the only thing that was different was the visit with Jack. Nathan didn't even think about it, he came over as quickly as he could. He made his way to Riley's room and called in. "Hey Buddy... May I come in?" there was no answer and so he slips into the room and he tries to talk to his brother, but there is no response. Riley is just silent, Nathan however doesn't leave and he waits for Riley. Sometime later Riley suddenly sits up on his bed and screams at Nathan, "Go Away! You shouldn't be here. I shouldn't even be here I am a mistake, worthless. Everyone would be better off if I weren't here." Tears start to pour down his face and in a very quiet voice Riley said, "Why do you even care?" Nathan looked at Riley and said quite simply, "Because I have to." Riley didn't really believe him and continued to press, "Why?" Riley really didn't think there would be an answer and even to this day he still remembers the shock he felt when his brother answered, "Because we are brothers and family is everything." He sputtered and didn't know what he could say. Nathan was saying family was everything, yet their father walked out on him, Riley moved so that he could wrap his arms around his brother and he burst into tears and said, "But I am a mistake, unwanted." Unknown to the pair of brothers, Elizabeth had heard the screaming and rushed to see if she could help but once she heard Nathan's first response she had stayed out of sight though she could hear every painful question her son asked. She never thought her son was a mistake to her, she loved him desperately and yet wished she could do more to help him. Nathan's answer though brought tears to her eyes, "You're not a mistake... I... I always wanted a brother." She left them in peace at that moment because she wasn't sure she could keep herself together. Elizabeth knew that her son would be okay then, it wouldn't be easy and there were sure to be other outbursts but she knew that he would always have a strong male presence in his life. When Nathan exited the room she couldn't help but wrap her arms around the teen thanking him through the tears. Their lives were not really what they expected and yet in a twist of fate they all became a family, a weird and patched together family and she was grateful this young man didn't blame her son. After that conversation with Nathan Riley had fewer incidents, he was starting to calm down and trust his brother. There were still moments where he thought this would be the day that he left but it never happened. A year later Elizabeth and Riley attend Nathan's graduation and Riley really starts to worry Nathan will escape and take this time to be rid of him, his big brother though surprises him and says that though he will not be in the same city they will still talk and get together during the breaks. The years pass and Riley starts performing better in school and even joins a few sports teams and Nathan and Elizabeth are always there to cheer him on when they have the time. Riley is happy, though his family soon grows. At 11 he becomes an uncle for the first time and gets to meet Kaelyn, he knows his brother hasn't told Jessia about his powers and so he keeps that secret between the brothers. Less than a year later he gets to meet the twins Dani and Fin and he can't be happier. The three little ones make him happy knowing that there is a larger family that will be growing up together. Shortly after though things start to fall apart. Nathan and Jessia breakup and he finds out that Nathan has given up all his parental rights. All he wants to do is help his big brother but he can't at 13. Though things get strained they still talk often. A few years after Nathan and Jessia, Riley finds out from Nathan that his nieces and nephew have landed in foster care. Riley is desperate to help Nathan find then and so he starts to plan for a career in law enforcement so that he can use the resources available to find his family. Graduation comes and goes but the best thing he felt about it was the surprise gift he got from Nathan, a video telling him that he is proud of what he accomplished and for what is to come in the future. Even though his brother wasn't there in person the fact that he still remembered and sent him the video was all he could ask for. Thier father Jack was nowhere to be seen. After graduation Riley applies and is accepted into the local police force and he completes his training, when he is not on shift he starts spending as much of his free time as possible trying to locate his family but he keeps reaching dead ends. As the years had passed while Nathan was away Riley had made sure to keep in contact with Samantha and spend some time with her, though it wasn't an easy relationship they became as close as could be expected, she had tried to give him a chance since her son had at the very beginning and both Elizabeth and Samantha while not friends would still have coffee or drinks from time to time as they both preferred each others company to that of Raymond Jack. When Nathan told him he was moving back Riley was happy to help move him in and even took some time off to help him get settled. Elizabeth even offered her services as a nurse if Nathan needed a hand at any time. Soon after Nathan tells him that Dani and Finn are in Calloway attending Ashford High. He hopes to get to know the pair at some point and still is looking for Kaelyn so that the family of 7 can be whole again. |
ALL THE SMALL THINGS
POWER | HEAT VISION |
POWER DESCRIPTION | With his power he can start fires when camping, or in his backyard fire pit. With the help of his brother over the years and his first aid training he learned how to use the power in emergencies if a wound needs to be cauterized. He can have a wider beam or a very narrow and precise beam for delicate work, however, the narrower and more precise the work the smaller his peripheral vision is and so in a fight he would be unable to see an approaching target, though he can hear normally so if they were to step on something loud he could anticipate an attack. If he over uses the power his eyes become strained and he needs to wear glasses to protect his eyes as they recover. |
SPECIAL ITEMS | He has a pair of glasses and a pair of sunglasses with a minor prescription for when he strains his eyes from power over use. |
