PERSONALITY | Leo is a nice guy. He thrives off the happiness of people around him. He truly enjoys making other people happy. Though generally a good thing, it has resulted in some unfortunate tendencies. Leo bases his self-worth on whether or not his environment is responding to his actions with positive feedback. If he can't make someone's day better, doesn't hear a thank you when he helps someone, he feels as though he's not doing anything worthwhile. Leo can't accept that he can't help everyone, and that means he's doomed to failure that he will beat himself up over. Leo is generally very extroverted. He is usually talkative, easygoing, and friendly to anyone - usually regardless of whether they treat him the same way. He's quick to make and keep friends. But he does spend a significant amount of time alone. As much as Leo thrives being surrounded by people, nothing can quite match the light, airy feeling in his chest when he hikes to the top of a hill to watch the sun set. In Leo's time alone, he likes to exercise, but also to contemplate. He is Catholic, though he keeps his religion between him and his God - he wears his cross beneath his shirt, never goes to church, and only prays aloud when he's alone. For Leo, religion is important, but private. He believes in God, and though he prays that God will protect him and lead him down the right path, he often fears angering God - much like he fears angering people. Leo defaults to a very calm, easygoing, cheerful state of mind, but that is not too hard to change. He's sensitive to plenty of things - criticism, cruelty, and so on. When he gets mad or upset, usually it ends in tears. He rarely gets mad enough to actually fight back - and when he does, it's for a brief moment, before he realized what he'd done or said and freaks out. He hates that he's not strong or brave enough to stand up for himself or other people, and he hates that anyone who picks on him can so easily get him to cry. Leo has a bad habit of beating up on himself. Though he tries to exercise some self control, he often ends up angry and frustrated with himself. He often feels he isn't good enough and should be doing more. Leo is very likely to overwork himself or push himself into situations he is uncomfortable with. Leo's biggest fear is loneliness. He's afraid that all the people he thinks care about him are just humoring him, or secretly find him annoying. He's afraid of not having anyone to be there for him like does for other people. |
THE HOUSE THAT BUILT ME
MOTHER | MARISSA LOUIS STERLING - 45 - Lawyer - "She was really close to me when I was just a kid, but after she divorced my dad, I didn't see her as much. She was always there, though, and she was always giving me things - money, a new bike, really anything I could want. She inhereted a lot of money, and her job is pretty high profile. Even after she and papà split, she still paid all our bills. We weren't really close, but I still appreciate that she made my life as comfortable as it was." |
FATHER | ARMANDO FIRMINO AGOSTI - 36 - Small business owner - "Papà and I were always close, especially after he and mom split up. He did most of my raising. He didn't know too much about raising a kid for a while, and there were some rough points, but we always worked through it. He recently reopened his business, now that I'm in a new school, so we don't talk as much, but I know he'll be there for me." |
SIBLINGS | "I don't have any siblings. After I was born, my parents relationship began to dissolve, so they didn't have any more children. But dad is dating a new woman now, so maybe I could still have siblings in the future?" |
OTHER | "My mom was never close with her family, but I know I've got a pretty big family on my dad's side. We've went to see them a few times, but it's pretty expensive to fly to Italy, and mom only pays for trips every five years, so I've only seen them twice. I don't know any of them very well." |
SOMEBODY THAT I USED TO KNOW
HISTORY | Marissa met Armando on her vacation, which she took to celebrate her most recent legal victory. They hit it off on the beach and after some *cough* passionate times together, Marissa had to go back home. They kept in touch, but though they'd liked each other in person, they were not necessarily compatible. Nevertheless, Marissa went back to Italy and it wasn't long before she proposed. Armando - nearly ten years younger, and not really understanding that he was ending up as Marissa's "trophy husband" - accepted. For two years, in which Leo was conceived and born, their relationship managed to remain on mostly stable ground. It was shortly after Leo's birth that things began to go downhill. The pair stayed together until Leo was a toddler before they split. After a vicious custody battle, Armando won not only the right to keep Leo, but also alimony from Marissa. For the adults, this was a hard time. But for a developing child, it was terrifying. The fighting and screaming would haunt Leo's dream for years before he was old enough to understand what had happened. Armando did his best to raise his son. For a year or so, it was difficult to do so - he had difficulty finding work, and the alimony was not enough to enable him to keep the apartment he and his son were living in. Luckily, Marissa eventually came over with an apology and a promise to pay any and all funds needed to care for her son - in exchange for being allowed to spend more time with him. Though this enabled his mom to be present throughout his childhood, he still was primarily raised by his father. It was because of this that he learned how to speak Italian moderately well - as a second language to English - and grew up surrounded by bits of Italian culture and the Catholic religion. Do to turmoil in his home life, Leo's elementary school years were riddles with bullying, bad grades, and letters home from the principal. Armando took action one summer, and spend his time with his son and his ex-wife, trying to create some semblance of family for the boy. By the time Leo was in middle school, his mood had perked up. He'd gathered a group of friends and joined the school soccer team. For the years of his middle school, Leo grew and changed, discovered his interests, starting volunteering at the local church - it also served as a food pantry for those who needed it. Leo met a variety of people. His charisma landed him with a lot of friends from different backgrounds. Before his powers started, his biggest worries revolved around them - some were drinking, some were smoking, some were in unhealthy relationships, the works. When his powers started manifesting, near the end of middle school, Leo didn't notice. In fact, he had no clue that he had power at all until he was swept away to Ashford. |
ALL THE SMALL THINGS
POWER | Echolocation |
POWER DESCRIPTION | Leo would be hard pressed to describe his power if asked. It wasn't quite like seeing, or like hearing. If anything, it was like feeling. He got a sense of texture and shape. He supposes he is quite gifted with his power - he can reach rather long range, and using it is barely more draining than speaking normally. So far, the only bump he has run into with his power is that it requires concentration. Sending out bursts of sound is rather easy, but to hear the waves he has to concentrate. Because the range of echolocation is higher than the range of human hearing, he must focus to raise his hearing range to a point high enough. While doing this, he cannot, or can barley, hear sounds within a human range of hearing. When he's concentrating, he can get his hearing range to that of most bats - 20 kHz to 80 kHz - which means anything below 20 kHz - human hearing range - he cannot hear. If he's nervous or stressed, an image can come back broken, with holes, or not at all. He needs to be calm to get a clear image. He also found that if he has a sore throat or loses his voice, he often cannot make the right noise to produce an image. |
SPECIAL ITEMS | Leo always - in bed, in water, in the classroom, anywhere at all - wears a wooden cross around his neck. He tucks it under his shirt when possible. |
