PERSONALITY | In general, Nathan tends to be a fairly relaxed individual. He leads a simple lifestyle, generally with no one but his dog or the occasional visiting family member. His work tends to be his first priority these days, and no one who meets him would ever be able to tell you that they've seen him be sad or depressed. However, Nathan spends most of his time struggling with remorse. The father of three wants nothing more than to be reunited with his children, but after several failed attempts during their early lives to reestablish contact with their mother he has mostly given up hope. He has never dated, remarried, or had more children. This is what he considers his penance for allowing Jessia to find out about his powers. Love, and everything that goes with it, is securely beyond his grasp at this point. |

SOMEBODY THAT I USED TO KNOW
HISTORY | Nathan grew up in the small town of Calloway, Wyoming. He was an only child for the majority of his life and his parents spoiled him endlessly. When he was thirteen, Nathan discovered his ability to heal people which the other local SPB's began calling vitokinesis. Of course this thrilled his parents who were SPB's themselves, ensuring that the family line would (hopefully) continue to run pure without incident. Things couldn't stay peaceful though, and at the age of sixteen, Nathan's life was shattered. His father was caught having an affair with another little boy turning out as the byproduct. The Kotney's quickly divorced and Nathan divided his time going back and forth between the two warring factions. By the time he was eighteen, he and his father had a love hate relationship and Raymond decided it was time to show his wayward son some tough love. To keep the checks flowing in that funded her lifestyle and allowed her to live, Samantha was forced to kick Nathan out of the house until he acquired a college degree. Raymond even agreed to pay his way as long as Nathan left the university with something worth while. Nathan left home right after high school graduation with ten thousand dollars and a one way ticket to anywhere in hopes that it would wake him up to the ways of the real world outside calloway. It only took him a few weeks to decide that medical school was what he wanted, so he hopped on the first flight to a big city he could find and enrolled in a decent college that would get him where he wanted to be. It was there that he met Jessia, an art student living out of the back of her car. They quickly fell in love and moved in to Nathan's apartment together, much to his father's everlasting horror. At twenty, Nathan dropped out of college to get a full time job. His father cut him off a few days after the news was revealed that Jessia was pregnant out of wedlock with their first child. However, Jess refused to marry him at the time because she didn't want to be pregnant at her wedding. Nine months later, his first child arrived and Nathan fell in love all over again. Kaelyn was beautiful, just like her mother. Jessia continued to refuse his on going proposal, first on the grounds that they had a new born and then because she hadn't lost the baby weight. Right as he began to hope that she would let him make her an honest woman, Jessia dropped a bombshell on him. She was pregnant again, this time with the twins Danielle and Finley. With the two newest additions, Nathan felt that their little family was complete, other than that Jess refused to let the children take his last name until they were married. All talk of that was brought to a halt one fateful evening when Jessia fell off a ladder and broke her arm. His first instinct was to take her to a hospital, but the pull from not using his power in so long was too strong for him to handle. He healed her arm almost instantly and was met with a very negative reaction. Once the children were asleep that night he was given two options: leave and she'd forget he'd existed or stay and she'd turn him in to the authorities. Thinking of his family and what it would mean for all the people back in Calloway who were living in hiding, Nathan did what he felt was right at the time and left before his babies woke up the next morning. Lawyers eventually sent him notices that he had abandoned his kids and that his rights would be removed if he didn't return immediately, but still he stayed. This was for the good of everyone and he kept reminding himself of that every morning when he woke up without his kids. Kaelyn's first birthday without him was when he finally broke down. He needed to be with his baby girl, but no one would tell him what had happened to Jessia or where she had taken his kids. This was that catalyst that encouraged him to go back to school. If he could be better, then maybe he could win her back and life could go back to normal. Three years after the split he finally got word that the children were in foster care and that Jessia had been killed in a car accident not long after the custody dispute had ended. The state refused his appeal and the documents were sealed so that he could not find his children, nor could his family on the grounds of abandonment. When he finished medical school, Nathan drifted around the country working in smaller clinics and trying to forget that he'd have to wait years longer before he could even use a PI to track down the kids. Six months ago, Nathan received word that his estranged father had died and left him everything, including a few properties in Calloway. One of them he gave to his mother, the house that she had always missed. Another went to ensuring that his brother always had a home, and the lake house he kept for himself. The little shop in town was renovated once his mother convinced him to return home. The town needed a doctor and he needed his mother, that was final. Nathan has only been back in town for a few weeks and the clinic opened a few days ago. He's slowly but surely reconnecting with the people in his life, and hopefully will begin expanding his horizons again soon. |
ALL THE SMALL THINGS
POWER | VITAKINESIS |
POWER DESCRIPTION | Nathan has the ability to manipulate a person's health. In general this is limited to small wounds such as a minor stab or cut, some broken bones, and minor illnesses. However, if he concentrates extremely hard and is willing to lose quite a bit of energy, Nathan can some times heal mortal injuries, such as a gun shot. He cannot bring someone back from the brink of death, as it would deplete him completely of his own energy and most likely kill him. The best he could do at that point is close the wounds that he could and then fix everything else the old fashioned way. As far as illnesses go, he can in general shave off a few days or hours, depending on the illness. He cannot make it go completely away. Nathan is limited to using his powers only a few times a day, so he tries to avoid using them at all whenever possible. They are physically draining and tied directly to his own energy source. If he goes too far, he can risk side effects such as dizziness, fatigue, and even death. |
SPECIAL ITEMS | Nathan rarely holds on to material possessions, but he does have the engagement ring he intended to give to Jessia. He keeps it on a small chain and wears it all the time. A small photo of all three of the children can also be found in his wallet, faded and torn but still in decent enough shape to make out their faces. |
