APPEARANCE | Flint always dresses well, almost never seen without at least a shirt and dress trousers. He favours dark coloured suits, deep blues or blacks, but varies more in his colour of shirt. One constant is the ring he wears on the middle finger of his left hand - a plain band of silver, a present from his father upon the realisation of his powers. He changes his hairstyle fairly frequently, a telltale sign that he has grown bored. Most often he keeps it swept aside, moderately stylish and practical. Likewise, he often flirts between a short, well trimmed beard, and remaining clean shaven. Generally, Flint is not one for physical affectations - He considers tattoos and piercings pedestrian at best, and abhorrent at worst. As with most people, however, he does have a perverse fascination with things he deems uncouth, and so is always very interested in the body art of others. |

WEAKNESSES | - Vengeful and bitter, to the point of obsessive at times - Very self absorbed, so terrible with the emotions of others - Not very physically fit - Dismissive and judgemental, leading to him being quite unlikable at times - After prolonged use of his powers, is physically and mentally drained to a very high degree |
HOBBIES | Flint is a big reader, and will spend hours in a reading room in the library that he likes to think of as 'his' - indeed, he has rearranged the room to fit his own preferences, and even hidden a bottle of malt in a little nook behind one of the bookshelves. This couples with his second hobby, a rather sad one in the eyes of some, but a fine one is his own. Flint is a keen purveyor of whiskey, and with the help of his father (His disagreement with American drinking regulations is one of the banes of his existence) has amassed a rather fine collection, hidden safely at the bottom of his suitcase under his bed. He will often spend an afternoon alone in his reading nook, a malt by his side, enjoying such a quiet and objectively antisocial activity in the way only someone to rich to understand the little things can. Flint is a follower and player of golf, and while he does not have a great opportunity to practice around Ashford, he has taken to walking out to some of the more open stretches of countryside nearby to practice his drive. He does not do this often, as it is very hard to justify ordering fresh batches of golfballs every week or so, but when he needs to clear his head rather than think intensely, this is his go-to activity. Finally, Flint is constantly on a quest for fine conversation. He will, when the notion takes him, spark a conversation with one of his casual acquaintances or a total stranger, in the hope of a stimulating journey of thought, or battle of wits. His own arrogance often leads him to dismiss people far too early, however, and so he often leaves believing this is a lost endeavour, unable to see that he is quite simply being an arse. |
PET PEEVES | - Noisy eaters drive Flint insane, to the point where he has more than once stood up in a crowded room and shouted in someones face for annoying him with their brazen act of chewing. - When people call football 'soccer', Flint immediately dismissed them as a skidmark on the underpants of humanity. |
PERSONALITY | Flint is a vengeful, malicious, spoiled little shit, make no mistake. He has all the qualities of someone who was brought up with too much money, and generally believes that the world itself is beneath him. That is not, however, to say that Flint is entirely unlikable. He is very charismatic, and when he puts his mind to it (and he often does) is a fantastic conversationalist, his company being a rare treat to those he takes well to. He treats his scant few friends well, and is always keen to network with those he sees as useful or relevant. To those that don't know him well, his defining attribute would be his intelligence - Tutored from a very young age, Flint excels academically, and thrives in a learning environment. He reads for at least 2 hours a day, and while his main love is literature, he is sure to splatter in non-fiction where he feels he can, ensuring a varied palate of knowledge that, while be no means even close to perfect, is very impressive. However, as I have said, his reputation is not that of a studious, kind man. Flint is known to be vindictive, and when he takes a dislike to someone, it is a hatred that burns hotter than the sun. He will use all of his resources to make the lives of those he sees as his enemies hell, and has on several occasions. Often, he will call in favours from friends to do the dirty work, so that he cannot be held responsible, but he is not above getting his hands dirty, and more than a few unfortunate accidents have befallen those who have gotten on his bad side. While not physically imposing, or especially strong, he is dangerous in another way - a SPB with plenty of money, and a will of iron. |
THE HOUSE THAT BUILT ME
MOTHER | Elaina Cotnoir - 40 - Housewife - "My mother has always been the more... well, it seems silly to say 'maternal' of my parents, but I guess she was the emotional core. For the first few years it was charming, and reassuring. Soon it became a little bit smothering, and when I left home to come to Ashford, we weren't on the best of terms. She emails often enough but we aren't exactly close. She's far too normal, I'm afraid." |
FATHER | Léonce Constantin Cotnoir - 54 - CEO of Remmen Ingénerie Fabricants - "Father has always been my closest supporter. Being an SPB himself he had long since let me know that it was a possibility I would be too, and explained to me how his own power allowed him to create the hugely successful company that's made our family so rich. He's truly tremendous, and a constant source of finance." |
SIBLINGS | None |
OTHER | None of note |
SOMEBODY THAT I USED TO KNOW
HISTORY | Flint's father, Léonce Cotnoir, was a fairly normal man until he turned 14, and suddenly began to absorb and understand information at an alarming rate. At first, he merely seemed like an overnight genius, but soon it became unexplainable - at 18, he was completing an engineering degree, had learned 3 languages, and through setting up various small businesses had been able to move out of his parent's humble country home and into an apartment in central Paris. It took his a few years of wondering and researching to find out about SPB, and to put a label on his own power - Hyperintelligence, the ability to learn and understand at a superhuman rate. His brain was faster than most computers. When he realised this, he was more than happy to abuse it and make a killing. He soon focused his energies on engineering, and began a massively successful businnes manufacturing, exporting, and installing high quality mechanical parts for, among other things, oil rigs and weapons manufacturers. By the time he was 35, he had a 3 masters degrees, a PhD, an honorary doctorate, and was worth over $50 million. It was little wonder, then, that he was able to find an attractive young bride, the then 19 year old Elaina Worthington. They married within six months of meeting, and for years lived happily in their London home. 3 years into their marriage, Elaina birthed their only son, Flint. He was a quiet boy, not speaking until he was nearly 2, but he watched everything with his dark eyes, always curious. Léonce took this as a sign that his son would be like him, and was overjoyed. So it was that, for most of his life, Flint was told about how great he would be, and how his power would make him unstoppable. It was impossible for him not to be affected, and soon the quiet boy began to act like he already ruled the world. His mother, for her part, tried to keep Flint grounded. While she loved the lifestyle they led, she had already come to resent her husband and his ridiculous beliefs that he was better than everyone around him. His treatment of her was never cruel, but it was cold, and she did not want her son to grow up so. And so she tried to teach him humility, to have him play with other children, children without powers. For a while it worked, and up into his early teens Flint was showing signs of normality, living a happy existence despite his father's influence. But all boys change, and puberty changed Flint for the worst. His father began to involve him more in the business, trying to encourage the power that he knew lay within him out. Flint never took to it, but as he spent more time with his father he began to relearn his previous attitude, to feel more like a god and less like a teenager. His mother, by this point furious, tried to talk her son back down to earth, but what followed was more argument than conversation. It soon became a full on shouting match, with Flint tearing his mother apart, a frightening figure for a young man. It culminated when, standing in their kitchen, Flint's power finally manifested, and he felt his mind explode as a psionic blast, comprised of his anger and darkest thoughts, entered his mother's brain and rendered her unconscious. Flint was terrified, but Léonce soon smothered his fear with his own joy. As Elaina was taken to hospital, Léonce told his crying son about how powers were the best thing that had happened to him, and that Flint's would only serve to be the making of him. As his father so often did, he soothed Flint's rioting emotions, and soon the boy was on his way to Wyoming rather more content that when he left. His time at Ashford began badly - Coming to grips with his new power, Flint was prone to slipping, accidentally shocking people near him with a blast of his power. Often, these were mild, more like a quick throb of a migraine that anything truly painful. Still, it served to shake Flint's confidence, and it took him a lot of teaching and self-introspection to realise that he was bottling up a lot of fear and anger from his encounter with his mother, feelings he had repressed when his father had charmed him into a state of satisfaction. Once he began to deal with these emotions, Flint's control over his power increased tenfold, and he was able to dedicate more of his free time to social activities. It was then that he began to learn a lot about himself, specifically how little patience he had for people who pissed him off. Over the years, many have (often accidentally) offended him in some way or another, and Flint has never been one to hold back on vengeance. As his control and knowledge of his power grows, so does his cruel streak, and as he begins to understand more about the world he lives in, he begins to see that his place in it can only be improved through sheer ruthlessness. Well, it's what father would have wanted. |
ALL THE SMALL THINGS
POWER | Psionic Blasts |
POWER DESCRIPTION | Flint's use of this ability is centered on his own mental state and emotions - specifically, in anger, pain and hatred. While he can use his power without these, it is never as effective as if he were to have a powerful emotional stimulant. In many ways, it works like method acting - to get full use of his powers, Flint must put himself in a position to feel the necessary emotions. Understandably, he struggles somewhat to drop into this frame of mind from nowhere, so it is perhaps 'lucky' for him that he is a very cruel and venomous sort. Flint's main drawback, aside from needing a specific mental state, comes after the use of his power. With extended use, he gets headaches himself, painful and all-permeating ones that cripple him mentally for hours, if not days, on end. He also enters into an almost hangover-like state, where his body feels weak and malnourished, food does not go down easily, and he is a centrifuge of guilt and regret. Due to this, Flint is very particular about when he uses his power, and avoids abusing it unless he deems it necessary. |
SPECIAL ITEMS | Flint isn't much the sentimental type, but a few items he has that are of note would be his notebook (with a green Florentine cover), which he uses not for study but for more general note-taking, and the silver ring his father gave him, which he wears endlessly. |
